Warplanes strike Al-Shabaab stronghold
fighter jets pounded a key base of Somalia's Al-Qaeda linked Al-Shabaab Sunday, in the latest push by African Union troops against the insurgents, the group and witnesses said Sunday.

I now understand the cause of heightened security.

I have just received the message below. Better safe than sorry

very serious threat confirmed by UN security. There's a planned terror attack to be carried out in traffic in any of our highways. They plan to shoot guys in traffic during peak hours, dy and time undisclosed. Please let your loved ones know

Good afternoon guys not to scare you but there is a very high alert on Nairobi and Mombasa from this morning. The US embassy is on lock down and is being guarded by Marines since morning. Staff have been told to go home and stay indoors. All US embassy & USAID field guys have been evacuated from Mombasa
The special forces also known as ISO's are also missing from the embassy staff say that something big is going down.
Avoid the usual places and TRM is worst of all. Now you know....forwarded as received

Isn't trying to shoot guys in traffic disastrous since they will be caught up in the same jam thus preventing their escape? Meanwhile our police have caught up with the perpetrators of the thika road and Gikomba blasts. Well done and may God give you the strength to deal with these cowards

Think about motor bikes and the fact that this guys are willing to die
You will know that you have arrived when money and time are not mutually exclusive "events" in you life!

SO just to ask where is our Intelligence service, don't they give citizens a heads up, and what did I read about inter-departmental cold wars that hampers information sharing,

it would not be wise to give citizens a heads up, it would cause more panic and disorder.

Concerning the advisories the foreign government give their citizens, its more to do with creating a dire security situation - and with it comes more perks for the expatriates.

Its not that the threat is not present, but its the same in say the US or UK, they are always on their toes looking out for terror attacks.

I wish those who have never worked with NGOs, Embassies and UN can one day see how guys get disappointed when the missions security level is downgraded thus reducing the perks. Most of them even ask for transfer to more dangerous missions just to get hazard allowance. Am sure now Nairobi will be the hot cake

Its sad that the guys being arrested are locals, I think the word terrorism has taken a sad twist, since the americans were hit in 01, and now all threats deemed to be terrorist activities will always invite dire consequences - human rights wise and also economically.

all the events that have happened have not had a link with a terrorist organization taking responsibility and as such they should be treated as criminal activities the same as a deranged american walking into a shopping mall or a school and killing people.
