Paul Ndungu is a very smart guy but I think he chose the wrong firm this time round...

He chose Safaricom as the firm to partner with early on... And he did very, very well... Then he bailed from Safaricom in time... SMART CHAP...

Lakini, choosing Telkom-Orange might turn out to be a huge error! Zain has taken the market by storm...

Mobicom is selling lines/phones/airtime but coz of the 'freebies'... Probably heavily subsidized by Telkom-Orange for now... BUT what will happen when there are no more free gifts?

Will people move to Orange from Safaricom?
Will people stay with Orange after Zain-Airtel's (& YU) 3/- move?

If Mobicom/Ndungu had partnered with Zain-Airtel... he would have lines out his shops!!! Apparently in some areas, the Zain SIMs had run out...

Though data will be huge for Orange... Zain-Airtel plans huge 3G expansion by Dec 2011...

VVS, nobody would have predicted that Zain would come up with such crazy rates. It caught everyone by surprise. 3G by Dec 2011 seems ages ahead. Probably the Kenyan telecom landscape would have changed. There's no telling what new technology would have arisen by then. And like you said, data will be big for Telkom. But had Ndung'u not jumped into Telkom as of now, he probably would have joined the Zain bandwagon. Are Orange going to slash their rates too?

@VVS

3G by Dec.2011? Wasn't it supposed to b earlier than dat?
Conventional thinkers waste time building shelters when they are unnecessary and then have no shelters when they need them the most. Socionomists do the opposite.

Its not by 2011 . I am attachd at zain/bharti and 3g will up and rolling by december this year. Its in high gear right now. The same 4 Orange . The data landscape 'll surely change. Lolest this Paul Ndungu is very clever. If he /the foreigners who are selling scom don't see any growth in Safaricom ,who are u ??

I don't think it was a bad move. The growth potential especially in the data market are high. ....

Futher more I trust the % on commission is quite high....
