The English dictionary defines an epidemic as "A rapid spread or increase in the occurrence of something" often this word is used in reference to spread of a disease.
Malcom Gladwell in his book "The Tipping Point" argues that ideas, behaviour, messages and products sometimes behave just like outbreaks of infectious disease.
"The Tipping Point", in his own words "is an examination of the social epidemics that surround us."
Gladwell stipulates that three key factor contribute to social epidemics, namely:
1. A few people with unique attributes. these may be well connected people, extremely knowledgeable people or even suave salesmen
2. Stickiness Factor. This is the appeal and staying power of the idea/ message/ product
3.The power of context. This is just about a favourable environment or timing that catalysis the rapid spread
Gladwell sites numerous experiments and case studies to explain the "tipping point" concept
This "intellectual adventure story" is a must read.
Question to ponder:
Is the growth of Safaricom in kenya our local example of business/social "Tipping Point"?
