If KQ gets a court approval, three banks opposed to the debt-to-equity proposals will be forced to follow their consenting peers and the Treasury down the rabbit hole as they will be deemed to have opted for the shares plus bond option “by default”.
People familiar with the transaction say Equity, Jamii Bora and Ecobank are holding out against the debt conversion plan, arguing that they “were not consulted.”
The three are collectively owed Sh6.4 billion (or just 13 per cent of the outstanding debt).

Banks in trouble. If it is not KQ it is Nakummatt all piling up on NPLs

This is a really a bankruptcy proceedings so this stock should be de-listed asap until it comes out of the bankruptcy. This is what Nakumatt should have done instead of waiting to be wound up by court.

Sigh, I see all my (investee) banks are on here!
Equity, NIC, DTB and I&M ... At least I am not in KQ.
Even though it hurts, I am sure they can survive the blow of 100% NPLs coz of KQ. Some may havealready NPL'd part of the loans given to KQ.

I would like to know how much Jamii Bora is owed. And why a big firm like KQ went to borrow money from Jamii Bora.

Well, if KQ can service the loans first per the Loan Agreements, then I am sure my banks would look at lending to KQ.

Those who approved the loans made to KQ should be fired and sued for professional negligence. I am glad Equity has taken a stand. It's a pity that NIC, I&M and DTB are acting like sheep.

@vvs for top tier banks to lend such significant sums shows that there's something about KQ that you don't know. Meanwhile Equity will be bundled into the transaction by votes. Unless they want to reposses a GoK 787.. What options do they really have in auctioning GoK

I don't think that will be the case. CBK prudential guidelines do not cover for the same. The debt would need to be settled from the sale of the converted equity

Why Jamii Bora? Either
1) KQ was desperate at the time or
2) Jamii Bora was desperate and made the assumption that KQ must be fine

Commercial banks that agree to swap their multi-billion shilling debt for a stake in Kenya Airways will be required to lend the airline an extra Sh18.1 billion at an interest rate of about 6.65 per cent, principally to refurbish aircraft engines.
