@mlefu,

kenyans,morealso the youth and middle aged are known to die for freebies. with club20 of zain,i think majority will identify with this. however,with internet becoming cheaper and faster by the day,safcom may make internet services free. but not in the near future. ama what's you take

@chi20,Giving out freebies won't make you any money as Zain found out the hard way. They quietly withdrew Jiachilie 65,removed free calls on club20 and had to raise their rates on Vuka tariff. The trick is in pricing the products in such a way which takes care of the bottom line and at the same time is competitive enough. MJ has just about managed to achieve thiat delicate balance...

Safaricom has 1.5mn data users. This number will grow as 'excitement' grows as well as younger users who are tech-savvy start buying phones. The drop in internet costs will attract more users enabling safaricom to boost revenues from the additional users.

I read it somewhere where there was a discussion of safaricom's potential for data income/revenue.
*Please note that this is NOT the same as 1.5mn unique users with modems but includes those who occasionally use their phones to access the web.
**Many users (like myself) use BOTH modem & phone (different SIMs).
***You can buy a corporate router/modem that allows 5+ users. So one SIM but 5+ users. Could they have been included as 5 not 1?
**** The 'free' or discounted modem promotion really jacked up the number of modem users. Of course,I have no idea how many are still using their modems.
***** Safaricom says one use every 3 months counts you as an active subscriber. Could the 1.5mn data users include people like me (3 safaricom SIMs)?

@ Vitu,I thought u were talking up the figures. We had a heated argument on the same during the weekend,but a friend working for safcon said there are normally 15000 to 50000 active users for their 3 G daily. I assume 2G data users may not be more than 150000 per day. This adds up to 200,000 daily....assume that these are not the same users. I think the data users may be 500,000,a third of what you indicated.

Lets hope zero VAT on phones will increase the numbers of data uers as well!
