If you were to import second hand from Japan,it will depend with the car make,model and Year of Manufacture/registration..Amount Starts from 450k for say a Nissan sunny to millions (e.gRange rover).Margins are 50k -100k on average.

Id suggest first you know your target clientelle b4 u start this biz.
Also try bring in Highend cars that are unique.
My Bro does the same business. Since he worked for long in the Banking circles,he targets those clients,specialises in BMW & Mercedes models only. He imports unique vehicles with sunfroof,leather interior,unique colors like black or yellow or red depending on client needs.
When the car gets to kenya,he soups up the car,changes the rims,puts bigger tyres,changes the lights to the latest version(both front & back) & Sells at a bigger margin.
Incase the client tries to look around he doesnt find the same specs,he is willing to spend more. On a car of price about 1.5M,he can make a margin of 200-250k per unit.

@kadonye;

I gather from your posts in this thread that you are completely green in this line of business [or any business for that matter]

First lesson: a business with potential to succeed starts with a ready customer [i.e. a person willing to buy from you]; then it gets the desired product [or at least identifies a source]; finally it get the necessary finance to supply the product.

50% of businesses start with a product and 40% with some finance....and [these] 90% of businesses fail withing the first year!!!

Only 10% of businesses begin with a ready customer and only 10% of businesses succeed.

So; before you start looking for where to buy cars [whether Mombasa,Japan,Singapore,UK,India,Dubai etc] figure out to whom you are going to sell them. Once you have a willing buyer,you can work out the rest.

As @Anycapp says,the key lies in identifying target customers and then everything else will fall into place.....

Behind the gardens...Behind the wall...Under the tree (Including: Red...Dark Blue...Yellow)
Nothing is real unless it can be named; nothing has value unless it can be sold; money is worthless unless you spend it.

May be he wants just one unit for himself/herself considering the following statement 'Any other details guys lyk,is importing better than buying @Mombasa?'.
