I think both have a few things in common that drive up the insane interest:
1. Both have phobia vs mania phenomena
2. Dissing either in the wrong company can lead one into being sent to an early grave by either mawe or machette.
3. Discussing both quickly degenerates into tribal slugfest.
4. Both have their respective cheerleaders on steroids.
5. Both are in a zero sum game when it comes to 2012 elections,only one will make it past 2012 alive.
