I hate it when you read my mind with such uncanniness.

Haha...we were living through the longest period in modern times, possibly since independence, when politicians did not hog the national limelight; then Sufuria happened.

It's distressing to try map out likely scenarios post Covid-19 in key areas: socio-economics, technology, medicine, religion and politics. Inputs into any model are changing too fast and in an unpredictable fashion.

Seems like we shall have major job losses globally; not only as a logical reaction to the inevitable economic downturn but also corporates implementing load-shedding which they always wished for, but for unions, strict labor laws and fear of political backlash.

Prayer meetings of two or more have been banned. And the lord may not be where 1 or less are gathered in the name of Covid.

He seems to be charging the phone at least. The 'where' can be answered positively in a way...

Life after COVID has only started today after the country recorded its first recovered case.
Politics is just things to keep the people divided and foolish and put your trust in men and none of them can do nothing for you...

Now that we have ascertained that "The Grand Father of Peugeot" is safe and sound, shall we revert to "Life After Covid-19", if there will be one?

The Mwea Rice Industry

Old Stock

For the Mwea Rice Industry and its dependants, it is party after party.

Currently, the lockdown has created an instant high demand "payment in advance" market for our rice.

Apparently, "households" out there are buying rice as a non-perishable food stock to help weather the lockdown.

Speculators have also entered the market and are buying pickup loads in the hope the price goes up, making themselves a killing.

This all means the old stock is rapidly depleting, the rice mills are working 24/7 to meet the new demand, and everyone is happy, ecstatic even.

Furthermore, with the lockdown worldwide, Mwea Rice Industry's most dreaded enemy, the Import Cartels, cannot bring rice in to meet the rapidly rising demand.

The best part, Mwea has not seen a positive case, yet. Ignorance is bliss.

New Stock

It is raining heavily out here.

For the rice farmer, this means a new stock is out in the field.

The more it rains, the bigger a portion a farmer can till, and the better the next crop.

In essence, this means we are anticipating a bumper harvest in a situation where there is no old stock in the stores.

That is a bonus that has not been seen around here in a long, long time.

Conclusion

The Virus is a huge "blessing" for the Mwea Rice Industry and its dependants.

The near future and "Life After Covid-19" also looks very bright too.

For now.

That's quite optimistic @Mahegoat. There are serious probabilities that you will soon be a fighter trying to protect his turf despite a bad cough from pneumonia.

In my opinion, chances are high that Kenya will be among the first governments to be overthrown by Corona. The slowness and lack of initiative, and lack of quality government officials will finally do away with this sick regime.

So don't be so smug. The game has only began.

@tycho, we do not have the luxury of smugness.

We are not the masters of our destiny.

First, despite promises going back to the colonial era, we do not own the land we farm. We are a settlement scheme.

We cannot grow any other crop despite "owning" land on some of the most arable soils and excellent weather Kenia has to offer.

The crop is subject to unfair competition from imported inferior versions of the crop.

We are poor in the midst of an astounding potential for affluence.

The Gods, in their infinite wisdom, however, have deemed it fit to inflict a triple wham of incompetent governance, Locusts, and The Virus.

Suddenly, someone is willing to pay a premium price for our hard labor.

Yes, we can rejoice. For a short time.

But smugness, allow me to differ, certainly not.

We still remember what Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome did to us.

Deep down, we know what is coming.

Allow us the joy of reveling in the fruits of our hard labor for once in a long time.

And when the pestilence finally strikes, as it surely will, we will go proudly knowing we have something in the pocket rather than in the shame of poverty.

I understand your position, sir. There is dignity in having some money when others have less or nothing. I am also working on such a project. Yet it may be necessary for us to determine if this is not the same old politics rearing its head again through our avatars.

Post Covid politics will question the importance of government if it can't guarantee a certain minimum for her citizens. A key area of concern is likely to be on housing. How does a government allow for homelessness within her borders?

Post Covid politics may also need to address the issue of self sufficiency. This is about for example, being able to manufacture and provide essential commodities for a citizenry as part of regular security procedure.

The reaction in Europe and America is tending towards mercantilism. Trump wanted a vaccine for America first. Ditto African states. But is this sustainable? Covid has provided us with a common enemy and one will be forgiven to suspect that even Corona can't be defeated without global cooperation. Climate change is still an issue to be addressed.

We need a new leadership orientation to be crafted from now, going forward. We need more inclusiveness and a redefinition of 'African Socialism'. For it appears to be the main idea that can help us develop workable models quickly enough.
