Thirteen students died while at least 39 were seriously wounded in a stampede at Kakamega Primary School. What a tragedy.

It's unclear but reports are class 5 kids were using stairs at end of day

I heard one class has 8 streams. Hole school over 3k pupils

Nothing unusual but why was there a stampede?

That's the part that's unclear. Why did the kids start running? Kids at that level are excitable and will run at the slightest of things

The 'stampede' may be a consequence of crumbling of the stairs. I imagine the issue could be the physics question: why don't soldiers walk in step when crossing a bridge?

If the number of students is high and there is structural weakness - for example the total load expected is less than the actual load, and students walk in step especially due to congestion, then the stairs may yield gradually till it gets to 'stampede'.

Just a probable scenario.
