One question bugging my mind is; why were the Pythagoreans so secretive about their work that one could only share their secrets at the risk of death?

Because religion was controlling the world 100%....the Earth then was believed to be flat and the center of the universe.
Anyone thinking otherwise was killed immediately when caught.

Not true. The Pythagoreans believed in a spherical earth, a heliocentric universe and the murder I have mentioned seems to have been caused by a matter that hasn't come out clearly.

Your belief about the ancients and religion is simplistic. Pythagoras was religious, yet his was probably not the mainstream religion.
