Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore does not expect competition from the Airtel – Telkom merger, he says real competition will come from Amazon, Google, Facebook, and Tencent

Safaricom’s CEO is set to retire from his position in August 2019 after nine years of service in the role. hopes that his successor will have an eye for mergers and a deep understanding of the financial services sector

That is where they are focusing at the moment. They know the telecom companies can't challenge them. Visionary!

The following conversation happened in May 2018

Fastest growing is actually Safaricom. in 4th place the year before and in 2nd place today overtaking JTL and Mawingu. First place will be grabbed in a number of months. By this time next year we'll begin talking about dominance in this arena as well

What are you talking about @Metch? Just in Sep 2017, Mawingu was in 5th place while Safaricom was still in 2nd place then. Since then, Mawingu has added +16,622 subscriptions to Safaricom's +8,252.

What's the ARPU for Mawingu?
Folks like fast speeds...
Zuku is the loser after blowing their advantage. A new (TZ) owner is buying 51% and perhaps the new leadership will flight back.

@VVS appears to be commercial in nature with a digital inclusion agenda, perhaps at early funding stage. But heck, Equity Bank could have been described with similar terms at its inception.

Why is there an * next to Wananchi?

But the firm (Wananchi) would still remain the same even if some of the shareholders exited. They would be replaced by other shareholders.

Zuku was the king but they blew their huge lead. I like competition.

Safaricom has a deep bench courtesy of Vodafone. After MJ left, BC took over and did a fine job.

Bob Collymore "Challenge to Safaricom will come from ‘big tech’: Amazon, Google, Facebook, as well as Chinese challengers like Tencent - not from Airtel - Telkom Kenya merger"

speaking of which when are the google loony baloons in partnership with Telkom starting their internet?

Loosing subscribers over 5 consecutive quarters is not a good sign. What if this stretches to 25 consecutive quarters.. Will they still have the 20m? People are leaving their network and it's mainly youth, who have no loyalty to brands, they just need affordable data!

No subscribers lost, they are still gaining even more than competition in absolute numbers.
Airtel gaining 1mn subscribers in percentage terms will be higher than safaricom gaining 1.2mn subscribers due to Airtel low customer base.
I said the gap is 20mn not safaricom has 20mn subscribers.
People aren't leaving them per se but are having two lines.
