Meanwhile, Safaricom has limited the number of free transactions of below Sh100 to three in a day which, if exceeded, then M-Pesa users will pay Sh1 for amounts between Sh1 and Sh49 and Sh2 for amounts between Sh50 and Sh100.

Let's hope the same cap doesn't affect Lipa na Mpesa 100 and below payment transactions...

I prefer bankcard payments as opposed to mobile money payments which incur extra charges...

Stage two will be safaricom taking a minority 35-40% stake in Ethio telecom

I think the Airtel "growth" is mainly as a result of availability of Twin-SIMs smartphones which Kenyans are becoming more Kenyans/youth interested in having Airtel as their second network just to take advantage of their new product offering - likes of tubonge and double data offers on 4G...

The pie is being shared. Safaricom's data service, though more reliable, costs at least 2x other telcos.
Safaricom, KCB look North as Ethiopia opens market

https://www.businessdail...0980-ydwgyyz/index.html
MTN announced the sale of its Cypriot unit to French billionaire Xavier Nielโ€™s Monaco Telecom on 16 July for about EUR 260 million, the first country exit in the company's 24-year history. Cyprus had the lowest number of subscribers of all MTNโ€™s markets at the end March, though Liberia and Guinea-Bissau were close. The only other MTN country division with fewer than 1 million customers is South Sudan, which has been engulfed in a civil war since 2013.

The sale of smaller markets could be laying the ground for an attempt to break into Angola, one of the people told Bloombrg. There are plans to
sell a minority stake in state-owned telecommunications provider Angola Telecom and hold an auction for a fourth industry operator. Meanwhile, the Ethiopian government is planning to sell parts of the state-owned telecommunications company to foreign investors, opening the door to a market long coveted by MTN and rival Vodacom Group, said Bloomberg.MTN Group considers selling some of its small and problematic Western African units...

Next will be a stake in Ethiopia telecom.
The two already have a fiber interconnection link at Moyale.
