Good observation there. Patriotism from Google, usual mischief from the press.

Uhuru's speech highlighted his big four.

1. Affordable housing
2. Affordable healthcare
3. Food security
4. Manufacturing

From 2017/2018 disciplined forces will procure all their textile and leather products locally. Applause Applause Applause Can't believe it took this long but a great move there.

Sadly, Uhuru again fell into the trap of making unrealistic promises.

500,000 houses ?? Will never happen.
Local processing of coffee and tea ? Will not happen either.

This is possible, unless of course you are talking about the Kileleshwa flats.

5 posts on Jamhuri day.
No one in my shags even knows it's Jamhuri day

Mmmhhh, Kenyans are tired with political speeches. Even malayas are worried about their next fool.

Just saying.

If low cost mass produced houses could cost about 800k per unit, then Govt would need to pump 80B per year for 5 years.

This is very very possible. Even without increase in revenue.

He should add all school uniforms to that list.
We will then need a lot of cotton to be produced locally. If they could convert Galana Kulalu to be used for large scale GMO cotton farming rather than maize production, that would be great

Uhuru's speech highlighted his big four.

1. Affordable housing-We shall do this by reducing the cost of mortgages; by cutting the cost of construction through the use of innovative technologies and materials; and by raising low-cost funds from private and public sector for investment in large-scale housing construction.

2. Affordable healthcare-We will review the rules governing private insurers, to bring the cost of cover within the reach of every Kenyan; to protect both government and Kenyans from fraud and abuse; and to let private insurers invest more in covering Kenyans.

3. Food security-Let me skip this one

4. Manufacturing- Our plan is to create an additional 1,000 SMEs focused on manufacturing: they will have access to affordable capital, skills and markets; and they will accelerate the growth in manufacturing, upon which the success of the Big Four depends.

From 2017/2018 disciplined forces will procure all their textile and leather products locally. Applause Applause Applause Can't believe it took this long but a great move there.

I read through Uhuru's speech it's good to see him for once concentrate on core issues instead of the scattered initiatives of his first term. My thoughts:-

1. Affordable housing-Unless he is thinking along the lines of Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac creating a liquid secondary mortgage market I don't see the affordable mortgages. Ordinary kenyans get their housing solutions through Saccos so maybe engaging with Saccos on buying their loans and packaging them into asset backed infrastructure bonds may work. There is over 200b saved in Saccos which can be securitized/leveraged to provide long term mortgages. Obviously I expect him to do the same interest rate cap for mortgages or replicate Hugo Chavez's Great Housing Mission.

2. Manufacturing-his approach of addressing this issue is typical "river-roadish". A manufacturer will set up in anticipation of demand for his goods. That will not happen if there is no economic density in the urban areas. A shrinking and scattered middle class will not bring manufacturing. Uhuru's housing initiatives is the creation of small fragmented neighborhoods the kind that makes labor expensive and costly to set up manufacturing units. Uhuru mentioned Singapore I hope he can learn from them on urban planning and the economic benefits of urban concentration.

3. Food security-I recently learned that the most suicidal group are farmers so let me skip this one

4. Affordable healthcare-public health has basically collapsed. Universal health care is more like free primary education-only good on paper.

The choice of venue was off. That place is off walking distance for the massses, and only ideal for hired crowds and at this point no one is willing to spend cash to transport supporters as the season for such is over. A smaller place like Nyayo would have done. With Baba silent, nothing much is happening to pull crowds to yap. Madaraka will be worse unless they take it to the counties for rotation.
