Is it a whale exiting before the ferry begins to sink or institutional investor seeing better things ahead?

Buyers of such huge lots/chunks do not buy unless there is a positive outlook. In this case, the outlook is very positive!

Do expect the following write-offs:
KPRL [1H and 2H 2017 to clean up the books]
Legal settlement [taken in 1H 2017]

Going into 2018, even with higher oil prices, KK is going in strong with a large retail network and export (EAC) market without laggards like TZ.
Zero local (KES) debt. Attractive financing terms for USD/EUR debt [Dutch banks]. Increased consumption in Kenya of (retail) fuel in 2018 vs 2017 [post-elections], etc

Is KK being prepped as a takeover target?

Not sure or convinced if that statement is true if history is anything to go by

That's an outright mistatemnt from chief @vvs.. what about the seller? does it mean the seller is always dumber than the buyer. the Greater Fool Theory works both ways. The one with better and deeper information about the firm always carries the day. Asymmetric divergence in stock trading

Fell from high of 16.70 to 14.50 Kes that is not so good given that Total rose from 20 to 26 at the same time though KK is doing better in the market
Is it time to buy before February when FY results start trickling in?

Reporting live from the exchange bar.. It was more of a bargain sale than the reverse. Expect lower lows

(Private) Buyers would have to have a positive outlook [whether it materializes is another matter] to buy the shares.

Possibly the Biwott estate or an affiliate.

Maybe....selling is the easiest way to divide up that wealth

Biwott is dead and buried. The family might want to blow the ill-gotten wealth on other things.
This is not a case of (honest) hard work and building wealth for future generations. In other countries, folks build/fund libraries, parks and universities BUT not so in Kenya with the politicians and tenderpreneurs.

What's the legacy of the likes of Karume, Moi [not those areas/monuments/streets/buildings named after him simply coz he was a potentate], Kenyatta [not those named after him simply coz he was a potentate], Kirima, etc?

I am glad to see the likes of Munga building (Pioneer) schools.
I am glad to see Chandaria funding part of UoN.
I am glad that Rattansi Trust funds scholarships.

I hope we see more Kenyans build their legacies by donating long-lasting (& sustainable) assets to the "public".

Anyway, back to KK... Under Ohana, it has done well and whereas there will be huge write-offs in 2017
- KPRL
- Lawsuits
- Segman

the outlook for 2018, despite rising oil prices, is good.

I thought the Segman matter was settled on Q4 2017. I just wonder for how much and the impact on FY17 numbers.

The following items were settled in 2017
1) Lawsuit about a lease for a station [Exact settlement unknown but taken in 1H 2017]. Cash paid out.
2) KPRL [Write off in 1H and another in 2H] will be written off completely. Non-cash. There may be a recovery in future years if Total's case against KPRL succeeds but this could take 10 years in Kenyan courts!
3) Segman [Cash payout in 2H. Newspapers say 300mn]

Clean books in 2018?
Will Ohana start shopping KK to interested buyers?

BTW, KK shows land at historical cost so there's "hidden" value too.
E.g. KK has 1 acre at the junction of Haile Selassie and Uhuru Highway. It could be sub-divided and 3/4 acre sold just keeping enough for a station.

KK is also looking for new stations that it will lease so no huge capex programs.

KPRL tanks have been converted to storage (under KPC) so ullage is less of a problem. As is, Ohana said KK prefers to have less inventory to minimize the costs of financing and price fluctuations.

On the issue of giving back to society... Not everyone has sophisticated Trusts and calls the press everytime they have a CSR event. Karume was a self made millionaire with legit businesses employing hundreds in Kenya. He also hosting his constituents at his Village Inn thingira whereupon he sorted out financial issues involving education, hospital bills, funerals etc.

That said I haven't heard of any goods deeds by the late Total Man.
