Kenya fish especially from lake Victoria is expensive, Should be going for around 1k-3k. However, you have an option of requesting Chinese fish which is cheaper

Today is Sunday so I hope you are not in the gutter.

Fish prices in Nairobi City Mkt

Tilapia and Nile Perch Fillet:-Between 550 and 700 per kg.Put markup for restaurants at 50% so Kilo should go for between 850 and 1050.A portion should be 200g hence between 200 and 300 plus accompaniments 400 to 500.

whole fish for the above is between 300 and 500 per piece so kwa restaurant its between 500 and 700 per piece.

Sea fish
Tuna and king fish 700/kg
Mackrel na Samaki wa kupaka 400 to 500 per kg
Do the same maths up there.

It all depends on location and how you want the fish?

True. Kenya has some of the highest fish prices in the world. Strange that fish should be cheaper in New York city than in Kisumu. It's no wonder that China is exporting fish all the way to kenya and still making money.

Simmers Club appears to have among the most expensive fish in town. Some very yummy coming from diverse places. You will encounter fish from all over e.g. Rwandese, Tanzanians and as far as Zibambwe. These fish can really travel!

Sea fish goes for 150/kg from the fisherman by the beach. However, if it hits the butcheries of the coastal towns, goes for nothing less than 400/kg. For hotels/restaurants, it should be higher than that. The 700/kg may be permissible when cooked. Nam Lolwe Tilapia is very expensive, same goes to mud and lung fishes. Very expensive. The Chinese Tilapia is very very very very cheap. The only place you can be assured of Lolwe fish is from the fishermen from the lake. Any other source is very likely to be Chinese fish.

I suspect its the Chinese fish.

Mackrel is bony and rarely comes in fillet form.

Samaki wa kupaka ni akina Tafi na zinginezo kutoka kwa bahari.Zapakwa nazi wakati za pikwa.

Next time read whatever is written on the carton. All the fish cartons/fish I have come across are made/processed in China.
