Why are Nasa overcharging customers whereas Ohuru has given them cheap unga? Nasa are wolves in sheep skins.

Quote:
A business woman in Makueni County was Tuesday arraigned in Makindu law courts and charged with swindling customers by hiking the price of maize flour and selling a 2kg packet at Sh140 instead of the government recommended Sh90. Jacinta Mwikali, who operates a shop in Kiboko market along Mombasa-Nairobi Highway, had been arrested following an operation conducted on Saturday by the Makindu Assistant County Commissioner (ACC) Auma Anyumba with the help of area Chiefs.

The state counsel told the court that the accused had committed an offence by selling an essential commodity at a higher price contrary to essential goods act No.26 of 2011 section 5. Jacinta Mwikali had appeared before Senior Resident Magistrate David Ndungi in Makindu law courts where she was charged with the offense which attracts a penalty of up to Sh1 million. She was released on a heavy bond of Sh500,000 and a surety of the same amount.

Baba was saying that Kenya should have imported maize from ETHIOPIA. But ethiopia is facing serious drought and famine. They need food aid...

Price of unga falls to an all time low. Wanjiko is very happy. Tano tena....

The price of wheat flour has dropped for the second time in two weeks falling below that of maize flour, which is a relief to many households.

The cost of most brands has reduced by between Sh5 and Sh6 to retail at less than Sh110 which is the same as the average price of maize flour.

A spot check in supermarkets in Nairobi indicated a two-kilo packet of Golden Flour has dropped from Sh112 to Sh106, Pembe (Sh116 to Sh108), Kifaru (Sh117 to Sh106) while Ndovu is currently trading at Sh108. Dola and Ajab are selling at Sh106.

Quote:
According to the farmers, cartels imported huge stocks of maize from Uganda at Sh1,800 per bag before selling the produce to the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) depots at Sh3,200.

They named Bungoma, Kisumu and Nakuru as some of the NCPB depots where the cartels sold the imported maize.

A section of millers have admitted that cartels took advantage of the early opening of NCPB stores store to buy and deliver the produce.

“All we know is that most of the maize imported by cartels from Uganda ended up in the NCPB stores while most farmers were still harvesting the crop,” said a miller who requested anonymity.

It is simple supply and demand. Let the market dictate prices of commodities by getting the government completely out of the business of buying and selling of maize. It is not fair for the government to artificially prop up the price of maize.

Ethics aside, what they need to do is set up a "grains exchange" that will guide the prices in the region. Otherwise corruption will never end

Govt should get the fuack off trade in agricultural produce. Whether maize, potato or arrow roots. Market forces should prevail. That is why kenyans are suffering with unga at an artificial high of 120 bob instead of market driven 70 bob.

FYI govt is only supposed to maintain a strategic maize reserve of "x" number of bags, not serving as a marketing channel for maize farmers where govt buys maize at artificially high prices and sells to millers leading to abnormally high unga prices.

We should open the EA borders to allow free movement of produce, goods and services. Why should a kenyan be buying a bag of maize at 3200 bob while it is 1800 across the border in UG? Why should a farmer be buying poultry feed at 2300 bob a bag while it is 1500 in UG? We should open the borders like the EU has done to promote trade and increase productivity.

YES!

And in addition the grain should be traded openly in an exchange to be fair to the farmer and buyer.

Why does govt buy maize anyway? It doesnt buy coffee or tea

The same mess is in the sugar industry. Because mumias and other millers claim they dont have enough cane to make sugar, they get licenses to import and sell sugar. They thus buy sugar at the world market price of 35 bob a kilo and sell the same to kenyans at 120 bob. And the tax payers still have to bail the companies out coz even with the "theft" from kenyans, they claim to be making loses. Kenya would be better off buying sugar from brazil at 35 bob instead of the cartels making citizens buy it at 120 per kilo. If kenyan sugar farmers cant manage to supply sugar at 35 bob a kilo, then they should switch to something else. Innocent wananchi shouldn't bear the burden of the sugar farmers uncompetitiveness/inefficiency.
