Hi fellow Wazuans

I wish to start small scale greenhouse farming in ongata rongai. I wish to start small with a 8 X 15 Greenhouse from Amiran and I already have a borehole so water is guaranteed.

My initial thoughts were to grow tomatoes an I even got a soil analysis done. However, I gather that tomatoes have lots of marketing challenges.

I m now thinking of capsicums as an alternative and wish to find out how marketable they are. Any wise counsel ?

Thanks in advance.

An agronomist friend once told me a 8 by 15 is too small to make any economic sense, except for Amiran the marketers.

Try sukuma wiki and spinach on an open field drip nose that you have water. Both are easy to grow and s good entry point in the market. Once in, explore other crops. Avoid high value crops for a start.

I suggest you visit several greenhouse farms doing tomatoes and capsicums. Have an objective list of what to assess/evaluate. And don't be in a rush, revisit them after some months and see how they are doing especially those that are start-ups.

Tomatoes are all about timing the right season which is tough because everyone seems to end up timing the same seasons. The prices swing unbelievably. The positive side is that with greenhouse tomatoes you sell steadily through several seasons and get chances to recover from bad prices.

Gathige's advice up there #2 is very real and valuable.

A fenced plot is what you're looking for.
