Hi wazuans, I have a 1/4 acre of land which i would like to utilize for farming as I save for constructing a house. However most farming requires water for irrigation, feeding animals etc. I was thinking of drilling a borehole for that purpose. Please advice on the cost of borehole drilling either manual (kutafuta msee adig) or otherwise.

Mobilisation of drilling unit from Nairobi- average 50K but depends on distance

Erection and dismantling costs- average 25k

Drilling 8 inches diameter from 0m-100m- average 3k per metre

Drilling 8 inches diameter from 101m- 200m- average 3.2k per metre

supply and installation of plain casings and slotted casings- average 3k per metre

Test pumping- 24hours- average 50k

Development work on the borehole, filling of gravel pack, well cap and concrete slab - average 20k

Please do not chimba by mkono. It may end up being a very expensive exercise and the water quality and supply is not guaranteed. Get someone with a proper drilling machine to do it.

First step: you have to get a hyro-geological survey conducted (approx KES 60k total plus you have to get NEMA and Water Resource permits for approx KES 20k - all permits take about a month to obtain);

Next step: drilling of borehole as per hydro-geological survey results - cost is approx KES 6,500 per meter inclusive of water analysis and water use permit (drilling 2 - 3 days max, permits in about a month after that);

Last step: obtaining a submersible pump - KES 300k and up depending on depth of borehole.

Its not worth spending over 1.5m to farm 1/4acre unless you want to supply neighbours.

Can the hydrological survey give an indication as to whether the water will be salty or not?

No. It will just indicate that there's water, the depth at which it will be obtained, and the best sites on the plot for the drilling.

Ok.If one was to "hit" salty water,would you know what options(apart from reverse osmosis) to explore to soften it?

Sorry, I'm not a water engineer. Your best bet would be to approach someone like the Water Resource Management Authority to find out what to do. The only thing I can advise is that you should opt for the PVC casings - they don't corrode (which would be a major issue if you have mineral rich - or salty - water), are cheaper to install and are generally more hygienic than steel casings.

I only know the basics of the borehole drilling business from a past life spent in the industry. So, beware - my info and prices may be a little old, but I don't think so because I hear there's more competition nowadays so maybe prices have come down a bit.

Those ones are hand dug shallow wells. They are cheap and not used for any commercial purposes

@majimaji the land is at kamangu. If i do a shallow well, i can still do smallscale farmin au.

@githae... i would also consider an underground tank. since I am farming and later going to build and move there.

Is it legal for plot owners within 50m of each other to both drill boreholes at the same time? Ama this is Kenya - moolah has been poured? Seems like everyone is now drilling their own borehole everywhere and charging an arm and a leg to supply neighbours. I am thinking of installing an infinity pool so I might as well drill my own as well ama?

@MugundaMan it should be 80-100m...50 m is pushing it.chances of one drying up is highly likely if too close.Infact many that were drilled in our dustbowl county many years ago have dried up because of the depth and distance between two boreholes.Kiserian dam that was supposed to supply water to many of the areas seems not to be doing much and many residents are skeptical of the water because of all the waste+chemicals that flow into that dam.
