Hello fellow car guys. This is some important information to save all car importers hassle from KRA. We had an incident today whereby there was a Mercedes S350 that had an AMG body kit, wheels and AMG badges on the vehicle. Although all documents and VIN number matched to show the car was a V6 Petrol. The KRA guy said it was an AMG so duty was uplifted to reflect that.
So for all those who wish to drive an M BMW, or RS Audi or STI etc but can afford the standard versions, please do the badging here. Even the landcruiser where you LX570 badges on Prados or Landcruiser. Simply asking for trouble.
This is a case of where debadging a car will really save you money.

With all those import duty changes would i stand coLLected to say a rough way of calculating landed cost of a vehicle at my doorstep from say kumamoto in Japan would be CIF (usd) X exchange rate X 1.75?

1.75 meaning duty would be about 75% cost of the ride.

So a Landcruiser V8 OF $34000 would cost ish ish
KShs 6m at USD/KShs 101/-

I think you stand coLLected,
Import duty is based on local valuation CRSP,which is then depreciated depending on the age of the car.
Excise duty is 150,000 for vehicles more than 5 years and 200,000 for vehicles below five years.
Total Duty=Import duty+Excise duty...

You all stand coLLected gentlemen.

Excise duty is the higher of (25% of excise value) or 200,000 for vehicle more than three years old

For vehicles less than three years, excise duty is calculated as the higher of (25% of excise value) or 150,000
