@Jalofg - why do you think the idea is down the drain? The talking usuallly stops when work starts - essentially the difference between domo and kazi.

The problem with equality is that we desire that it be with those that have more than us rather that those that have less

Jalofg,

A ready market in Nairobi of 2000kgs per week and they ain't meeting that,besides the 'local' demand.A single guy recently approached them with an offer of 250 shs per kg for 2 tonnes every week.............Probably a smart SKerian.

@ Njung'e,

Thanks for the info. I am amazed that the demand is that high. Exactly where do they sell the rabbits. Then,what is the initial investments... special cages,etc.

I am also interested in the breeds. Are there breeds that have higher demands than others.

For the feeds,is there special feeds for them. I used to rear them when i was a small boy and i can tell you those tiny things really feed. I live in a 1/4 acre plot and i doubt whether i can grow enough food for commercial rearing.

A place in makadara,or its environs called,Nairobi Garbage Recyclers,has a nice project on rabbits and they also sell rabbits for breeding. They are using very little space,a quarter acre is large. Sorry that i do not have the telephone number,or exact location.

Jalofg,

They are selling to a supermarket in up-market Nairobi (No names for now).Rabbit cages require little investment and should be of the following minimum measurements

Buck (mundurume)- 70 X 60 X 60 cms

Doe (Nyakinyua)- 100 X 60 X 60.

Include a feeding trough,water trough (Water bottle if you want you rabbits to look sophisticated -:) ) and a kindling box (Mataneti).

Food;...Pellets,kales,carrots,cabs,napier grass,green pasture and uuuuhhh.!!!...Mukimo..!!.I mean left overs..!!.A rabbit will consume no more than 150 grams of food and a litre of water in a day.

Breeds:...Best in body weight is the giant Flemish.Can weigh 6.5 Kg live.Best for breeding is Chinchilla.It's on heat 365 days a year and 366 days in a leap year....!!Over the counter price is 200 bob a Kg and 70 bob for the skin....$$$$$$$$$$$$.......Sorry.i got carried away in dollars.

Breeders:.........One Buck,three does...........6K (that set can multiply into a poulation of 328 rabbits inside one year)

That's 5 summits....-:).....Ingine??

@Njung'e,

Thanks for the detailed report. From my calculation one 'thungura' cost 1.5k.

I'll get back to you when i am ready to start. ie after i make the cages.

Njunge,give me the contacts and I'll be there over the weekend. Just tell me how much the cost and at what age they are.....The does preferably served.....My experience is that I don't trust anyone in this business so they seem to be a bit honest?... Just send me the email. Some details I would like to keep private

by the way Njunge,one of the reasons I don't trust some of these guys is the idea of 368 population in one year....The issue of inbreeding is serious and I have started getting the feeling that most of these farmers don't understand its implications.....I know of one farm in the us which lost its whole population because of inbreeding. So if you know of another source of these buggers,just tell me.

@Alma,

I had the same concerns but i can assure you the project lead is not a farmer herself and she is handling the entire thing proffessionally.i have just talked to her on phone and she says the available breeders are the NZ and California white (700 bob each).If you are for the Flemish giant (1500 bob each),you would have to wait for a month.BTW,she is also coming up with a booklet on rabbit rearing in Kenya.
