Or the dough makers in bakeries. They could be customised to make ugali. And there's a huge market in hotels, schools, colleges and hospitals etc.

There are also domestic chapati dough makers that could be converted to make ugali by incorporating a heat source.

Of course no one will make it simply because no one really needs it... We would want it but no one really needs it. It's like vitamin pills... Everyone agrees they are great... But a smaller percent takes them. What you need in a market this small is to establish a real pain. Make a painkiller not an idea people think is good but are unwilling to fork out real money.

I think you are talking about yourself now. If you dont take vitamin pills, it doesn't mean that theres no need for them. The vitamins business in the US is a $20+B business and that doesn't mean that the trend will not catch up with the rest of the world....I refer you back to Steve Jobs, the greatest innovator.

If anyone is thinking of making one, they can go ahead, i will be the first buyer.

Our love for things western means we never get to try out stuff, unless a muzungu makes the thing (and if at all it will be made its the musings who will do it), I mean all those roi do not add up, the financial sense is not present since the population is poor and no one will buy the thing.

But come to think of it, if only we took some time to study our backyards then come up with relevant curriculum based on the same instead of copy pasting what akina mit have, then maybe the engineers might have seen sense. But for now they are busy trying to come up with a new m-farmer app.

You know - colic medicine are billion Dollar industries - that don't even cure colic. new parents will try anything to keep their sanity. Vitamins are also billion dollar industries. the difference is... for you the guy making the vitamin - will you be in business long enough for it to grow to be it's true market size? I am sure most parents know about or have bought 'Bonisan'! The analogy is to show you even while the potential of the market is big - if there is no pain involved - it will take a while to grow that market and especially if it's in the poorest of the poor section of this planet. A small boy does not take on a market that will develop 10 years away... that is the difference between you (the ugali maker) and Apple (which created a precursor of the iPad called the Newton like in 1987). Do you have the lasting power to wait to see if ugali makers will be big enough? So - @Muchr, at what price are you willing to buy the Ugali maker?

There are product design and implementation procedures that make innovation easier. It's when such procedures are followed that we can identify what to make and when at minimal risk and more gain.

One would be... go to @muchr and tell him - I want to make an ugali making machine! I want you to commit X dollars for it! I want you to give that guy (pointing at @tycho) X dollars to keep in escrow! if @Muchr and 100k others take up your offer (kickstarter style) - you are in business! But if your strategy is to build it, brand it, ship it and they will come.... you will not be in business for very long! As some wise guy once said - "Build it and they will come," is not a strategy; it's a prayer!!!

Yes, I gave you numbers earlier, there is a population of over 130M+ East Africans who eat Ugali almost daily and more are born everyday. (why is Unga such a big deal) The Ugali maker market is/will be present as long as Ugali eaters live.

The vitamins(colic and anything else really) market will be present as long as those mothers keep giving birth. And for vitamins - as long as the population will keep on getting informed.

The problem with you and those of your ilk, is analysis of paralysis. When Steve Jobs went forth with his plan of the Ipad he just saw what the Ipad could do, sold the idea and people bought into it. The price of IPAD 1 was about 80+K did it fail?

Let that Ugali maker throw in a price of his innovation, if it can save me the hustle of cooking Ugali and you know how involving that can get(but I guess your wife does it so you may have forgotten)....I WILL buy it without even blinking. Remember there's a difference btn price and value.

Good to see that you have conditionally committed to the ugali maker... based on price!

I asked a couple of questions - none of which you have answered... how much are you willing to pay for the ugali maker? is the pain of cooking ugali enough to make you think of buying a machine for X dollars to cook it?
2) Remember my assertion that people upgrade away from Ugali? this is just an observation that as soon as people have more disposable income i.e. have X dollars to spare for your contraption - they don't eat ugali as much as you thought they would - I would like to hear your response to this observation. The reason Unga is a big deal is exactly explained by this... the people who eat the solid paste frequently are actually the ones that won't afford to buy version 0.1! The many poor people rich in votes but a bit short on cash!
3) Steve Jobs was the master of reality distortion - something that you have been caught in... iPad 1 was not the 1st tablet... I pointed you to the failure that was the Apple Newton plus the fact that Microsoft had like a tablet in 2002! (remember the expression - the second mouse eats the cheese?).

I am not being negative for no reason, I am asking fundamental questions... really! This is not a science project. Ideally the guy who is making this contraption needs to have a plan.... Anyone watched the underpants gnomes episode of south park?

The key for him is STEP 2! remember Apple did not need to have the iPad flying off the shelves to be 'successful' - you as the ugali maker - needs to!
You need to figure out step 2! @WazuaAdmin - can we have some neon lights here... pointing at the statement YOU ARE NOT APPLE!

I repeat - Answer the following questions to build your case - really simple things you would think:
1) what is the problem (pain you are solving, the job that the person buying the gizmo is hiring it to do)?
2) what is the cost of the solution to 1 above?
3) who are the people you are selling your whatyamacallit to and where are they?
4) what is the cost of getting the thingamajig to their doorstep (or supermarket)?
5) do these people think that the problem is worth spending the amount specified in step 2 + step 4 above?
6) how many people answer affirmatively to the question in step 5 above?

@Tycho introduced an interesting aspect - the process. I say - if you want to build an ugalimaker... start a kickstarter! and test 1 to 6 BEFORE committing cash and waiting for them 'to come'.

or maybe - let's throw away all initial analysis and pesky questions from naysayers and 'believe' we are steve jobs and attack the market after inventing our thingamabob! It's entrepreneurship right? it has everything to do with belief and passion!

As much as it is offered. I didn't want it to get personal but since you are pushing let me brake it down. I have bought a washing machine that does my laundry for 20+K, A dough mixer (because i love chapos) for about 15K...a chapati maker is in my plan.. a rotisserie because my significant other has to have Kenchic kuku porno that was about 5K. A rice cooker for about 5K A pineapple slicer 1.5K because i saw it work fine..planning on getting a dish washer because allover sudden, nails have become important, heck give me a price and I will buy that Ugali maker.

If it was...you'd be shocked at how people would find it cool. You just need to go to the airport to see how Kenyans living abroad carry Jogoo Unga as luggage. I wonder how many metric tonnes of Jogoo are sold by Unga ltd esp given that the poor would rather mill their maize

The reason Unga is a big deal is exactly explained by this... the people who eat the solid paste frequently are actually the ones that won't afford to buy version 0.1! The many poor people rich in votes but a bit short on cash! The ugali making process is what is hectic....its not as easy as boiling rice. If it was...you'd be shocked at how people would find it cool. You just need to go to the airport to see how Kenyans living abroad carry Jogoo Unga as luggage. I wonder how many metric tonnes of Jogoo are sold by Unga ltd esp given that the poor would rather mill their maize

Those that failed were simply not well sold. If they failed then we'd not be having the latest Ipad or tablets that we have today....thats why continuous improvement is a necessity

I am not being negative for no reason, I am asking fundamental questions... really! This is not a science project. Ideally the guy who is making this contraption needs to have a plan.... Anyone watched the underpants gnomes episode of south park?
I dont know who said that there's no plan, ofcourse the plan would be the underlying factor. What you are asserting is that no one would buy the item...I raise my hand am here

But ofcourse am not Apple...did I say I am? Besides Apple is not the only successful company is it?

I repeat - Answer the following questions to build your case - really simple things you would think:
1) what is the problem (pain you are solving, the job that the person buying the gizmo is hiring it to do)? Ugali making process takes time...if that can be saved by the Ugali maker...problem solved

2) what is the cost of the solution to 1 above? the maker will establish that
3) who are the people you are selling your whatyamacallit to and where are they? Ugali eaters
4) what is the cost of getting the thingamajig to their doorstep (or supermarket)? once the thing is made taking it to the shop is no hustle
5) do these people think that the problem is worth spending the amount specified in step 2 + step 4 above? that is the seller's job
6) how many people answer affirmatively to the question in step 5 above? again the seller's job

@Tycho introduced an interesting aspect - the process. I say - if you want to build an ugalimaker... start a kickstarter! and test 1 to 6 BEFORE committing cash and waiting for them 'to come'. isn't that the process for everything that is made[color]

or maybe - let's throw away all initial analysis and pesky questions from naysayers and 'believe' we are steve jobs and attack the market after inventing our thingamabob! It's entrepreneurship right? it has everything to do with belief and passion!

Ati you just nailed it in your last sentence...full circle smile

The Ugali maker has to answer those questions - not the customer!

I guess his job is half done.

I wish it was that simple... so the job has not even started! I have had a fetish with hardware for a while... so I have invested some cash in it...I have done work on it... shipped stuff...I have researched on it and I have realized something... The idea is nothing! People telling you that your product is great is just slightly above nothing... the best is a guy (WHO IS NOT YOUR MOTHER) get's into their pockets and pays you for that product - you may have something... a person who does not know you getting into their pocket and paying you.... you are on to something... if you can repeat that.... you are great! if the customer tells others and they buy.... YOU HAVE A WINNER!
By the way it does not need like a great idea... there are people selling chicken in town and killing it... Do you remember KFC when it started and the queue outside like for 3-4 weeks? there are people selling sandwiches it's raking in the big bucks.

of course the market is king! if you can widen the Ugali market... great! but every person I know who came across ugali in their old age - hates it or is indifferent at best.

The idea is the beginning of everything, nothing exists today without that. The argument was that the Ugali maker cannot be viable since there's no market. Mine was that to blow that off...now it would be nice if someone actually got that IDEA from ndemo and run with it...because buyers like me are waiting

both of us are guessing - right? We are humans with biases...

I am guessing based on my own bias that there is no sizeable market for the ugali maker and enough people willing to spend real money to make a business case out of it.

You are guessing that there is...

Both of us are convinced that our guesses are right...

My proposal is.... the guy doing the job should not believe any of us! Or fall in love with his idea! He should follow the 6 steps I gave to justify whether that idea has merit!

maybe 'guesses' is the wrong word... let's say - we are both 'hypothesizing' smile

The jamaa should go for it. There's a market for everything, how you sell it is what matters. It would be a lie to assume there's no market

I wouldn't like to commit to saying that the ugali maker will meet a market need or not. Instead I'd prefer to follow the scientific process. That is;

1. Consider the ugali making process
2. Develop a hypothesis that would fit the machine and possible users
3. Incorporate a sample of my target market to test the hypothesis
4. If hypothesis is affirmed then incorporate sample in the design process and engage it along the process
5. Continuous and recursive testing and development
6. Prototyping
7. Product release
8. Continuous appraisal and development

Entrepreneurs need to adjust to new organizational models- read 'platform industries' that take advantage of lowered costs in engaging the market via social media and social networks. There's a whole new market that has emerged for technology based products and interestingly enough Kenya and Africa has a youth advantage, and youth is innovation ...

I know times have changed, the days when a guy working in his workshop inventing a bicycle Tyre tube and the same going on to have lots of success are gone.

Siku hizi returns are the fore most consideration, and the days when the scientific minds were mostly idle are gone, the same now are begging for customer care jobs huko telcos (no offence to the men and women who sort our issues on the phone), while chasing around loans to get the latest drive.

But I honestly think as a society we are messed up, we are copying too much what the west have, sadly that includes their standards, on that route we will never accomplish anything, our people will continue to be without tap watter because we think the building code ya britain has to followed when building our dams.

We will continually die in our houses since we have no transportation, since our standards for building roads are copy pasted from usa and the cars allowed on our roads have to meet the same emission standards as the Europeans.
