Dear Comrades,

I need your help. I noticed that my son(3.5 Yrs) has developed enlarged adenoids and tonsils in April 2015 and he's been having difficulties in breathing(He's snoring heavily when asleep). I went and saw a specialist(ENT) and she gave us some medication and later on suggested removal of the adenoids and tonsils as the last solution. If there is anyone on Wazua whose son or daughter has ever faced such a scenario kindly advice on how you went about it or if there is any medication that was recommended to heal this problem. I don't want him to undergo surgery.

Kindly Note your assistance will be highly appreciated.

sorry for that...if they are not soo enlarged and are not affecting his growth,you can manage them with nasal drops. some outgrow them with time. surgery is a permanent solution but seek a second and third opinion.

the trick is, if it is not affecting your kid then you let it be and it may disappear as he gets older. no medicine would really held as the adenoids are muscles (that's what dr. internet once told me).

however don't even think of managing them if they are having adverse effect on him.

had the same problem with my son. snoring heavily. at times would fail to breath in his sleep and kind of wake up (called sleep apnea and can kill).

some of the things mine had were (at about the same age as yours):

1. difficulties in speaking well - airway is so small and the little guy will try to breath through the mouth and speak at the same time;
2. mouth almost always open - guy has to breath through the mouth;
3. poor feeding habits;
4.face starting to be elongated;
5. frequent visits to hospitals because of sore throat/cold/fever etc (any sugary thing like juice was an immediate trigger).

ps: as enlarged adenoids interfere with oxygen intake, it can lead to the brain sensing the lack of oxygen and asking the heart to work harder than it ought to and before you know it you got a kid with heart problems.

went for an x-ray and the airway was hair-thin i could not believe it. based on how he was and the x-ray doc recommended removal.

was told by some people how operation is bad etc. ignored them and had them removed.

simple procedure really. kid is put under anaesthesia, the adenoids and tonsils removed without any incision on the body (apart from the adenoids and tonsils i believe) as they are reached via the mouth. procedure is about 45 minutes to one hour. kid admitted in the morning and is out the next day. two weeks later all healed up.

from then onwards, all the problems i mentioned above have never been seen again (apart from cold which is like any normal kid now). from my experience, you would only get to understand the effect of the enlarged adenoids and tonsils once they are removed and you kick yourself on not doing it any earlier.

if you want the contact of my ent doctor i used can give you. a second opinion doesn't hurt.

@NAIROBI00,
My experiences:
Case 1:
I had a similar problem from childhood. My parents tried to manage it because they could not cater for the surgery cost not mentioning the risk propaganda. I was a regular visitor to the hospital when I was in high school and college. One day, the college doctor advised me to have them removed once I am done with college.
I got a job immediately after college and had them removed – of course using medical cover.
As of now, you cannot know I had such a problem.

Case 2:
My little sister had a similar problem. I took her to Nairobi hospital (ENT) during the April school vacation in 2014. The doctor recommended surgery as a long time solution.
Based on my experience, I did not think twice. Gertrude usually have medical vacation offers (discounts) for kids (I knew this from the doc) and therefore he gave me a note to deliver to them for admission. He did come and performed the surgery on the appointment date. The total cost for everything at Gertrude was 96K – including the doc fees.
My sister is now well.

Conclusion: surgery is the only permanent fix

I'v read testimonials of people thanking their parents, for sticking to their guns, and NOT having their tonsils removed!!!

Every part has a role to play in the human body. Please don't deny your child his body part.

As for the answer, it lies in the gut. Or.... See, disease is not a bad thing. On the contrary, its a VERY good thing. Disease, is the way the body communicates, when something is wrong. The problem comes in, when we choose to ignore the communication, or mis-interpret it. Something is wrong somewhere. Either
1. The environment you live in. Mold, fungi, dust, pollutants, radioactivity from phones etc
2. Diet. And herein lies the source of most problems. Sugar, diary, gluten, milk, processed foods etc
3. Stress. A silent killer. Life is hard and more often than not, its taken out on a child.

Yes, you might opt for surgery (God forbid!), but whatever the real cause is, it will still continue killing. You'll seek a short-term solution and not face the current predicament, but you might bury your own child in a little while because of Cancers, Diabetes, Sexual Dysfunction and other auto-immune ailments... because you chose the easy way!

My daughter had the problem. As a result, we were in hospital every two to three weeks with a new infection, mara this mara that, until a Doctor recommended surgery. The pesky things were removed and my girl the frequent hospital visits ended.

I would suggest removal if the things seem to predispose her to too much infection and stuff like that

My Son's were also removed, i had not noticed the elongated face but looking at his past photos , the face was elongating, I had postponed the procedure for almost a year in the hope that nature will take it's course and they would subside but the situation was getting worse. the boy was very inactive and always tired during the day due to poor sleep as a result of blockages and snoring during sleep.
Now he is very active, i think if the child is above three years and the Tonsils are grade 3 it;s better to remove them.
