Ethiopia isnt an example Kenya should look to. Its not just a repressive state but is also one where the flow of information is heavily controlled by the state. 500 Somalis could be massacred in some remote corner of Ethiopia and the world never know it. Kenya is a more efficient target for Al Shabaab because global coverage is assured if they can kill just one persons.

You wont see the below incident from two days ago on Al Jazeera, BBC, CNN etc.

And this is the second one in less than two weeks. The following was at the beginning of June.

That could be more than 100 dead in less than two weeks. If something like that happened in Kenya, it would make the international headlines for days and be analyzed to death by Al Jazeera for at least one month. Obama and Ban Ki Moon would be issuing statements, ICC would issuing threats on crimes against humanity, folks would cite Ethiopia as an example of security worth emulating, some NGOs would be claiming Ethiopia treats Somalis better than Kenya hence fewer attacks etc.

In other words, Bullshyet.

Kenya can and must improve its security but Ethiopia is no example. Its precision and effectiveness is over hyped unless Kenya wants to follow the easy but neanderthal path of indiscriminately massacring Somalis.

Its all about percepetion...especially those 7% economic growth figures they cook up. That be said Addis has little crime all to do with less gap between the have and the have-nots. You get this stuck in the 80s feeling up there. And the place is too polluted. They dont call Kenya a power house for nothing. In many aspects..tuko huuuko mbali kwa corner years ahead. Just that the backyard of the country Kenya like many houses is a bit unkempt...i mean that corner up North n North east where trash is burnt

Am sure that gave you a mental catharsis typing out that. They say the same thing about China don't they? Today, the debate in America is how to approach China given that its the economic power house of the 21st century.

I dont doubt Ethiopia's growth numbers. The growth is primarily driven by government investment. Whether it is sustainable is another discussion.

But on security matters, there is a romanticization of Ethiopia's anti-terror sophistication.

I think the Ethiopians deal with terrorism the same way the Americans deal with the same, just that the Ethiopians are more secretive while the Americans sex up the same with drones, guantanamo and hollywood.

Al Shabaab attack today. Two galant KDF soldiers killed but thankfully 11 assholes were gloriously dispatched to their hopefully female virgins. Apparently, they are quite useless when confronted by armed personnel.

Just like I said, its the leading story on Al Jazeera now. 100 dead on Somalia/Ethiopia border and dead silence.

Ethiopia's strength is not competence in security but the ability to stifle information.

terrorists thrive on publicity - actually if the world decided never to publish or talk about terrorists activities the same would end immediately - lakini profits have to be made and egos have to be soothed.

I have driven from addis towards Djibouti. What I liked was placement of cops every 5kms on the highway to provide security. That highway also leads to somali border but still Ethiopia have secured the busy highway used by trucks from the Djibouti
port
