That is a campaign gimmick. She can't touch Prison Industrial Complex if elected.

@Whiteowl

The important thing Hillary has done is to raise awareness about this issue. For too long the consensus from politicians has been that you have to show you are tough on crime by sending every tom dick and harry to prison especially if he is black. Many elected judges also campaign by promising to be tough on crime. Now people are realizing that this is stupid. Fewer people will vote for so called "tough on crime" candidates.

With regard to the prison industrial complex, none other than the Koch brothers are in support of reducing sentences and sending fewer people to prison. If the Koch brothers with their huge bank accounts are getting behind this issue then you better believe that congress will soon move to reform the criminal justice system. Nobody influences republican politicians more than the Koch brothers

Is Hillary supposed to continue with everything her husband did 20 years ago or does she have her own brain?

I don't take any US politician seriously when he/she talks about reforms on Prison Industrial Complex, Military Industrial Complex, Federal Reserve and the healthcare system especially on a campaign trail.Its like a Kenyan politician saying he/she will fix youth unemployment, corruption, tribalism, equitable distribution of resources, education ,healthcare and agriculture. All the above are real issues but are only picked upon during campaign time coz they provide good sound bites for primetime news.After the campaign is over history has shown that they're always swept aside. So I won't be holding my breath for an old guard like Hillary to implement any meaningful prison reforms. Obama was a "new guard" when he promised to withdraw US troops from Iraq and tame the excesses of the military on the national budget. He did withdraw them only to replace them with an equal number from a rebranded blackwater army.

Two things :
1. No first lady will embarrass her husband by publicly disagreeing with him. That would be silly.

2. Even if she agreed with Bill 20 years ago, people are allowed to change their opinions 20 years later. If changing your mind makes you a hypocrite then everyone is a hypocrite.

Why now?
because 20 years ago everyone thought this was a good idea. Now even Bill has admitted that it had unintended consequences.
