Federal Reserve - Bitcoin: Technical Background and Data Analysis

Highlights from the document

Our estimates suggest that the number of daily users has doubled every eight months.

As of October 7, 2014 more than 64,000 businesses were reported to accept payments in bitcoins around the world, and the exchange rate was more than U.S.$300 to the bitcoin, which is more than 50 times higher than 24 months earlier.

As the diagram suggests, the entities transact directly, that is, in contrast to most traditional payment systems where various parties, such as banks, processors, and networks, sit between the payor and payee, there is no designated intermediary in Bitcoin.

Because the rate of making transaction records is stable over time, there is some certainty about the rate of growth of bitcoins (hence the amount of bitcoins in circulation).

Moreover, because the rate of growth of bitcoins is set to decrease exponentially, the total amount of bitcoins is bounded at 21 million and the bound is expected to be reached in 2140.

Decentralized systems such as Bitcoin replace third party intermediaries and the records kept by them with the public ledger maintained by a distributed information system.

It appears that, accounting for the large mean growth of bitcoin value, the risk associated with holding bitcoins for very short periods of time has remained relatively stable. Notably, however, the disruptions in the normalized exchange rate volatility are of substantial magnitude and appear difficult to explain or to predict.

Re: Bitcoin Price 2015

The market is cornered. Time wise, we now have better evidence that we are close to a longer term bottom than we have had throughout the bear market beginning last December. Consistent with this evidence is that we continue to fall a bit more. weak miserable price action, probably no more than 2 months, and then we may see some fireworks. In due time the ATH of $1100 will probably be broken by the best potential long term EW counts.

What exactly is bitcoin? How is it different from other currencies?

bitcoin is a new kind of money - cash for the internet. Just like we all have cash for the REAL world, bitcoin is cash on the internet.

bitcoin is not issued by governments, central banks or anyone else for that matter. This is one way it is different from other currencies you are familiar with. The process by which bitcoins comes about is by a technically complex process that computer experts agree is pretty amazing.

bitcoin is electronic and uniquely programmable - a first ever! So it has endless possibilities that were not possible before. Developers can make all sort of new stuff that radically change the shape of banking, finance and payments.

bitcoin is different from other currencies because its supply is capped and known from its inception. 21 million bitcoins - that is all there bitcoins there is. Currently, 13.6 million have been produced at a predetermined rate. Every 4 years, this rate of production cuts in half. This makes bitcoin a digital asset with digital scarcity. Even gold isn't this scarce.

bitcoin is divisible into smaller units as much as into 100 million pieces. So, while the dollar is divisible into a penny as the smallest unit ($ .01), 1 bitcoin is divisible into 1 million unique units each named a Satoshi (0.00000001 BTC). This is also the smallest unit one can transmit or send. This has tremendous implications for example, while the price of 1 bitcoin is currently $ 315, one can, in theory purchase a fraction of that for less a penny. This makes it extremely accessible and affordable ASSET class for ANYONE, including the poor!

PS: I will add more with time and possibly spin this into a blog series! Thanks for asking!

The Winklevoss Bitcoin ETF will make investing in Bitcoin as simple and straightforward as buying shares of any other exchange-traded fund.

Buy recommendation on bitcoin. LOw prices now, might never see them again after a bullish break out in the coming weeks.

Put in 5,000 KES, observe and wait for March 2015. $ 750!

PS: If you're a long-term investor (i.e. you're happy to wait 6+ months), then anything under $300 is a gift.

It's getting close! smile

There is a lot of blood on the street d'oh! Bitcoin price crash at start of 2015 coupled with the Bitstamp outage is causing a lot of jitters and negative publicity. The price has just been going down

This is a chart from one month ago. before all the price action today.

Just like any other market, technical charts have been helpful. Elliot Wave especially.
