Backed by local Sunni tribesmen, the jihadists exploited widespread anger among Sunni Arabs, who accuse Iraq's Shia Prime Minister Nouri Maliki of discriminating against them and monopolising power.

Six months later, they launched an assault on Iraq's second largest city, Mosul, to the north. Thirty-thousand soldiers dropped their weapons and fled when confronted by an estimated 800 militants. Emboldened, the jihadists advanced southwards, towards the capital.

Many have pledged to help - Iran, US, Turkey etc. but the die is cast. This period on history will leave rotten egg over George Bush and negative consequences of American fear.

ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and al-sham)caught the US intelligence community sleeping, by adeptly evading the much vaunted US surveillance.

The end of the American empire and the world order it represents. There's now much space for the rise of new powers- I see a multi-polar world; India, China, probably Russia, and a resurgent Africa? The game is open.

Yeah.
Egypt of old is in Africa, is it not?
So is Carthage, which almost knocked out the mighty Roman empire.
There is also Abyssinia, an early empire of note which is mentioned in European historical works, which also successfully resisted colonization in the 1800's

Deadly results of British hubris many decades ago ...

Still, Iraqis are pawns, slaughtering (they are all muslims aren't they?) each other in an oil and geopolitical chess game between the US, UK, Iran, Syria, Saudis, Turkey, Qatar and other middle east powers.
Sad
I hope they wake up before millions are dead.

ISIS militants have now looted $450M from Mosul. This is officially the richest terror group now.
