it was a bit awkward when Azerbaijan's election authorities released vote results – a full day before voting had even started.

The vote counts – spoiler alert: Aliyev was shown as winning by a landslide – were pushed out on an official smartphone app run by the Central Election Commission. It showed Aliyev as "winning" with 72.76 percent of the vote. That's on track with his official vote counts in previous elections: he won ("won"?) 76.84 percent of the vote in 2003 and 87 percent in 2008.

to be fair this is quite plausible! There are people testing RTS as we speak if these results were to be released via a smart phone app (coming to a store near you) - would people still cry foul - yes. Would they be justified - no! Its test data.

Happy Baku, the agency that developed the app, has disputed that it showed predetermined election results. A statement published on its website said the results came from testing the app using data from opinion polls and “did not have any relation to this year’s elections”.

Hehehhee...what would have been even more interesting is if the testing had shown the incumbent losing by a landslide smile
