Hello all,
I have been in IT for about 10 years but I need to move to the next level.
I want to get into finance and investments even if it is at an entry level.
Is it possible for a stock brokerage firm employ me even if it is for a huge cut in the pay package ?

This caught my attention. 10years.. is quite a long time in this industry of ours. Anyway.. I believe you can still get employed. If it gets too tough, you can go in as an IT consultant, or their "IT guy" (as we commonly refer to them). Once inside, you can't miss ways of getting to the right department. Curious.. at what point did you develop this interest in Investment Finance? Life is joy, death is peace, but the transition is very difficult.

Yes, I realized the other day that ten is quite alot.
Well, challenge with IT is that after a certain period, you need to move to the business side of the organization. and hence the move into finance and investment.
as for interest in investment finance, my current IT consulting job entails interacting with financial institutions,so,I am inclined towards it.
If i get into the company as the IT guy, will they allow me to go to do company analysis ?

Then, this wouldn't be an unbearable change. Changing dept will depend on your efforts. If you are "pushy" type, you will succeed, otherwise, don't expect them to just accept a formal request from you that you want to change. Go In, hang around with folks in the right dept. Know the recruiter within that dept... volunteer to do some of their work. Soon, a vacancy will always show up, which you can take up formally. End of the day, the Value you give is what will matter. I have used that trick before, but just within IT. I got in, then slowly "forced" myself into where my heart really was within that org. Good Luck. Hopefully, you will get even better advice from fellow Wazuans.. KR, Life is joy, death is peace, but the transition is very difficult.

Someone willing to take a pay cut? That's passion! Great!! Few love what they do. They're in it for the money. Maybe you should enroll for a course in the financial sector like CFA or a Masters. Will show the would be employer that you're serious. All the best

In develop countries, IT, engineering and even healthcare people with extensive experience would leave their career and go back for an MBA, they are always the most attractive recruits after MBA..... What I know is, it is hard to switch departments unless you have or acquire unique expertise that can be utilized in finance and investments eg data mining, SAS or/and big data

you want to move to the next level and you have no problem with an entry level position, then you mention that you are currently in IT consulting with financial institutions and yet you ask if you get into the company as the IT jama, whether you will be allowed to do company analysis ? I don't get the challenge with IT and moving to the business side of the organization and the same equating to finance and investment.
