Rift Valley Railways’ contract to manage the rail link between Mombasa and Kampala will be terminated if the government buys a proposal by Transport principal secretary nominee Nduva Muli.

RVR has been one useless consortium and i wonder how they've survived all through.......Terminating the deal should have been done a day after it was signed.I hope it comes true.
Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.

Laughing out loudly this thing has been loss making thus it has been a drag on Tranny's earnings....oh hail GoK for another populist move...do they have the money to refund Transcentury and others? Always read further...dont rely on newspaper reports to draw conclusions...let them cancel...for me I see it as payday...just like if UG was to cancel Umeme's concession...do you know how much money I would get? This are agreements with massive legal & financial implications...you just dont wake up & say its over!

TransCentury will be wise to take the money and run!
I've never had faith in this concession, mired in controversy and bureaucracy at every turn

RVR are in serious default of the agreement. They should be paying us for these default

... so, how much will you get from Umeme if the contract is not renewed?

They might not cancel that deal because most of the times when these contracts are done, there is always clauses that will protect each party, this time i think Transcentury is well protected, unless there is a clause that talks 'if they fail to meet their part of agreement eg development etc...' then maybe the govt can use that clause to take back, which i highly doubt. we dont even hv money to pay them.

RVR has not defaulted intentionally. RVR is another Telkom, GoK sold mahewa assets and they know it. For RVR it's even worse, the assumption was that there was a railway that can move goods at internationally accepted speeds well what do you know - 25KPH pap! The amount of cash spent and credit lines in place to fund core items to the efficient running of the railway which was not contemplated is collosal and will certainly see RVR concession renewed when it expires.

Bw Muli is a con, he is cheating us that the contraption at GM will be a functional station jeez, after his Sio Kimau fraud! who should we believe on RVR - a con civil servant or Citadel who put it in hard earned cash in bucket loads?

Kausha, surely there must have been some due diligence done on the status of the railway when getting into the contract?

One of the lessons I learnt is that GoK often has its way.

1) I remain a fan of KK but it can be tiring. The only plus is when the price dips, I buy more but it is a long wait.
2) Look at KPLC. The Rights Issue IM had information on a pending tariff increase. Nothing. And then Ruto beats it over the head in a populist move. I am staying out of Umeme for the same reason.
3) This is Kenya/Africa where you can fight the populism (like KK) but it takes a long time.
4) I think RVR is in breach of various clauses & GoK/GoU may have cause. I am not sure coz I am not a lawyer nor have I read the detailed agreement.

Populism wins the day. See how KK is being hounded by both the mandarins in government who want to fund their retirement plan before they retire as well as their Private Sector cohorts who want the ullage on the sly.

Part of the reason for the suspension by MoE is to eat into KK's ullage allocation at KPC.

RVR eases tensions after Sh1.7bn rail repairs

Rift Valley Railways (RVR) Tuesday said it completed the repairs of the Mombasa-Nairobi track as the operator races to strengthen relationships with the government that has threatened to review its concession agreement.

The rail firm said it had built 73km of new railway track between Mombasa and Nairobi at Sh1.7 billion and the upgrade had cut cargo delivery time between the two counties by six hours.

This comes as Transport Secretary Michael Kamau put RVR on notice, saying that the performance of the rail business had failed to live up to expectations of the Kenya and Uganda governments seven years since the operator won the concession.

RVR had no intention of putting money into this concession, they have not even purchased a single locomotive to date. Quite ashame indeed that they brought in Roy Puffet who had no absolute idea on how to manage the concession. Let the Govt cancel the concession and invite fresh bids.

I also don't blama TCL and Citadel. They are the victims here. The f-up was from GoK and IFC, the concessioned the railway company to Puffet who was a brief case conman. He had no money and the concession was so watertight he was never to be diluted and he had no money. To move him out it took several years. Then the railway from mombasa has been in shumbles which meant trains only move at 25kph. Majority of the wagons and engines listed in the concession do not exist. Simmilar case to Telkom Kenya. So now RVR is supposed to use half the list and zero railway to meet targets meant for the full list of equipment and a working raily. Tell Kamau to do what he is saying if he has the spine!
