Welcome to wazua. You might need to give more details about the car. Is it already in TZ, why would you prefer Dar to Kilindini?
Keep it simple

I once asked here and i was told that the car will never be registered by KRA (you will never get a kenyan number plate) because of the age of the car. In addition, it will be treated like you are importing a car from another country (TZ) to Kenya hence you will pay Import duty, excise duty and then VAT but of course only if its within the acceptabe age. So, dont waste time and MONEY inporting a car "twice"

Thank guys...yap TZ does not have the 8 year rule and i saw i saw in some sites that the CIF for cars importable into Kenya was cheaper in Tz.I brought in the EAC issue because i thought duty would only be payable once.

What of buying a used car in TZ,and re-registering it in Kenya.How would that work out.

Thank you good people.

@nyoso
in very simple language
1. you cannot register a car in kenya if it's more than 8 years old. it does not matter which custom port you use be it eldoret, jkia, malaba, namanga or mombasa.

2. for you to register a car in kenya duty must be paid to KRA unless exempted by applicable law eg diplomatic cars, agricultural tractors, car owned by self for at least 2 years outside kenya etc.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.

Two ways to do it

1. If the car is registered in TZ you can obtain a temporary import permit (at a fee) which I believe is valid for 3 months… after which you are compelled to return the vehicle to TZ. … I don’t know how many times you can repeat this (if at all)
While you are in Kenya, keep all documentation with you at all times.... Consider yourself ‘bait’ for traffic cops.

2. The other way to have the car registered, is to have it sent to ……? (This information could not be verified. Please send an email to kin350@gmail.com for further details)

@D32, the 8 yr rule still applies, so it does not make much difference b/n buying in KE and elsewhere. The exemption process would be tedious and not worth the hustle unless you are a diplomat returning home
