Without reading the article...let me take a guess, the huge population of 90M is  most of which is graduating to middle income level. Ethiopia has been closed for a while it will be good for KE firms to capitalize on this "There are only two emotions in the market, hope & fear. @Hisa, Thanks for the correction. Wherever I travel out of Kenya... I normally see vodacom and I thought this is name of the parent company in UK. What is the relationship between Vodacom and Vodafone?

VODAFONE is the parent company based in England and owns parts of this vodacom through shareholding just as in Safaricom (it owns 35%). The name VODA comes from VOice and DAta. Receive with simplicity everything that happens to you.” ― Rashi

Unless these guys open up their economy they are wasting time on billion dollar infrastructure projects! Even China opened up when they realized the domestic economy cannot sustain itself! These guys if they are not careful will end up like Cuba or North Korea  Mark 12:29

In a country like Kenya where foreign banks have been allowed to compete freely with local banks the local banks like KCB, Equity, NIC, CO-OP have still managed to come out on top of the likes of BBK, STANCHART, CFC mainly due to product innovation, strategic pricing, strategic placement etc The Ethiopians should actually use this as a case study to test the actual harm or good of allowing foreign banks to compete with local banks! NB:KCB, Kenya's largest bank by asset size has an asset base double the size of Ethiopia's entire banking sector.. (shs400B vs shs200B) Mark 12:29

If they lift enough guys to middle class status then they can shelter their economy from external economic shocks
