Do you remember that piece run by KTN sometime ago about these petty thieves who would take advantage of the good nature of people to rob them? They operated at the Globe round-about and at the height of traffic, they would walk in between the cars scouting for a lone driver with his/her passenger door open.
Soon as they identified a potential victim, the guy to steal would shout to one of his thieving buddies,'mtupe nimsanye!!',and the accomplice would approach the unsuspecting driver asking for directions or whatever. With the driver's attention now given to the guy he thinks he's helping, the thief would stealthily open the passenger door and make away with whatever he could,be it a cell-phone,wallet or whatever!!
Well, there's a similar scheme being used by those guys who hang around Kenyatta market's parking. Soon as you drive in and are parking, one of them approaches you asking whether he can wash your car or watch it (watch it from being broken into by who? The same characters he's hanging out with? Haha).
In my case,as I switched off the engine,I noticed another guy at the passenger door from the corner of my eye,but thought nothing of it then. All the doors open when I switch the engine off,and the guy opened the door just a bit. Enough for me not to notice. When I tried to lock the car with the alarm switch,it let off a warning when one of the doors is left ajar. After ensuring the driver's door was firmly shut and the alarm was still complaining,I remembered the guy who had approached the passenger door and went round to check the door. Sure enough, the door was slightly open, and would have given him a chance to get in.
I always ensure that there is no red light on the dashboard display before I drive off,so i'm positive all the doors were shut. They'd probably have pretended they were washing my car later as they carted away whatever they could!!
