Hi! Is the problem with gearbox or ECU?

Confirm which so I may try to help you search. Also, quote engine model to be exact.

I hope you used a proper mechanic who has proper diagnostics tools and has confirmed what your problem is,otherwise you may be stressing like this without just cause. 500,000 for gearbox is definitely too much to pay for just a gearbox,am sure hiyo figure is much lower....u confirm then post back here...

500,000/- !!!?? Gearbox ??!! (WTF).

Import one from UK 50,000/= used/ re-con + 15-20k (shipping). & you pick it up in Eastleigh.

@mwatha,am sure u can assist this friend. The UK has been viewed as an expensive area, but with current GBP rates,it is quite fair. If you are willing to trust jkmwatha, can you go ahead and contact him and place the order. Otherwise, you may still get in touch with me tuone.

@Mwatha,I have a bike seating in a friend's garage awaiting shipping,I just got it on eBay in readiness for riding to SA for 2010 world Cup. Can you let me know what needs to be done pre-export on the UK side. Is there inspection similar to JEVIC or JAAI of Japan? Is there a de-registration cost? Where are u in the UK? I have a friend who may put it in his container, but just in case I need help with the logistics, can you help?

@Nyangao,hii ni mitsubishi gani? Model, year, engine initials..please,I will make enquiries and revert to you.

@Sigiriri - Bike? I will assume mo-bike rather than bicycle (imagine riding a black mamba to SA).

I have never exported bikes from here, but if it requires registration in Kenya I believe it will need inspection, adjustment of V5 documentation (logbook) and one or two other things. I will try to find out .

Vehicle inspection in UK is now done by JEVIC and costs roughly £120- 150. You may otherwise ask your friend to contact JEVIC (+44 238 0335120) http://www.jevic.com/jev...ionservices/index6.html

Where am I in UK? Mostly in London.

@Sigi - Like any other vehicle your bike requires KWI- Kenya Roadworthiness inspctn. This is done by JEVIC. Below are requirements

age limit - less than 8yrs
V5 (logbook) submitted to indicate that the bike is being exported
at least 4 months remaining MOT test certificate (a compulsory annual test of road worthiness of vehicles over 3yrs old).

If it is to go by air freight, engine oil and fuel must be drained.

Auka - no pick = contaminated clutch plate (contaminated with oil). Difficulty engaging 3/4 could be worn out synchromesh units (or rings though mostly it happens with 1/2 as the most overused gears) - have you checked with CMC abt a gearbox overhaul? Just the synchro, seals, etc - not the actual gears and stuff? I do not think it should cost more than 60,000 for such a job.

Given the lack of pick (i.e. oil contamination on clutch plate) plus difficulty engaging, its possible your gearbox sprung a leak somehow, contaminated the clutch plate and is wearing because of low cc oil....just my two bits. .

@ JK Mwatha or OgutuWalwanga

As the 2 guyz with obvious car import rules knowledge,is it true that I need only hang on to my Merc for 1 year then I can take it to Kenya duty free?

Something like returning expat

@DJinn - Thanks u for the insight! Eye opener...i will drag it to CMC for diagnostics. HAd taken it though to some kalasinga who whecked it out and failed to fix - wanted to open teh Gearbox i said NO as he did not look commital on outcome. He chaged the computer box with another one, wapi, same problem. Man it really pisses when you have a good car that drives like a mkokoteni!!

@anyone who has any other ideas please share..thanks!!

@Obi - Yes 1 year's enough -.as long as you adhere to the other requirements -

less than 8 yrs old car & you've been out of KE for upto 2 years without returning to stay for any period of more than 90 days.

It is advisable to take the most expensive car you can lay your hands on... eg take a 2006/7 Range Rover Sport as opposed to a 2002 C-class Merc. ( After all it is duty free) The amount you will save is 'obsene'.

In some cases you dont have to wait for a year....... you can 'slyly' back date (1 year) the log book with DVLA (vehicle licensing people). Just outsmart them kidogo.
