hello guyz.just noticed that there are few timber yards around kikuyu and its environs and pple have to go to kawangware tto buy timber.i have a vacant plot on the highway to set up a timber yard.problem is wea do u source raw timber,wat machines do i need to set it up,how much capital for a mid sized yard do i need to set aside.pls assist.thanx.

Total costs of setting up an eighth of a timber yard is approx 3.5m.however u need relationships with folks who buy to survive,its not just about location or scarcity in a particular area,but offcourse this takes time

3.5M? What's the breakdown? Does the 3.5M include equipment like saws and lorry? Suppose one already has the land and a chain link fence all around it and an office shed, what more will one need - not counting the stock.

@cherubim, most softwood kenyan timber comes from mau forest/nakuru and aberdares forest/nyahururu. also, a good amount is imported from drc for hardwoods and tanzania boarder/mwanza/arusha for softwoods.

Comparing this price and the price on this thread. Of course it'd be interesting to see the cost breakdown in both.

It can cost you as little as 100K if you own the timber yard simply source for the timber that has been sawed from areas like Nyeri. YOu can begin small and grow the yard with time.
