The government has once again attempted to protect the farmer by eliminating middlemen..

Do their plans make sense and will it work?

Good initiative but not well thought through. The problem like pointed out by the article is that the farmer only has a few days as "market day" within which to sell his produce, that combined with transport issues are the main challenges.

If the farmer could get access to storage points and have easier access to transport then that would be a 50% win for them against the middleman

As is also pointed out in the article “Farmers have been at the mercy of middlemen because of limited knowledge and negotiations skills.
The government could give farmers basic entrepreneurial skills with short courses aimed at enabling them understand the market and hence gain business knowledge and confidence when selling their produce
Barring middlemen into the market is just half the solution
