Sasini plans to give up coffee farming on its 1000 acres land in ruiru and venture into real estate. The article also states the current value of the land is "20 Billion Shillings" where sasini has a market capitalisation of 2.5 Billion Shillings.

Is it worth buying the share guys?

When it comes to Merali companies, be very careful when investing there. Merali cannot be trusted in business dealings. Don't be surprised if sooner or later, you hear that Sasini took a loan of 15billion using the land as security. The money was pocketed by one muhindi and he is now hidding in london.

Big question, if Sasini has converted the land from farming to real estate status, did management consult shareholders before embarking on the same? If not, be very very afraid.

With majority of the population struggling to survive,we are not very far from the property crash.

First let me declare my interest i bought into sasini as a speculative buy because of the high coffee prices and the favourable exchange rate, i must confess in this bear market it has provided solace for my portfolio. That said I think the price quoted is exaggerated and of course the MD says they will need shareholder approval to change business line. I'm expecting a dividend yield of 10% so can't say it's a bad buy. Please buy if you understand how to value biological assets

How sad it is when all of a sudden, all the big land owners are switching from forex earners, even when our currency is struggling with the current account deficit ballooning,to real estate!
What will the future generations feed on? What about our future bop status?
We should realise what anf where our strengths/competitive advantages are!
Good for Sasini in the short run!

Guys be cautious when buying these shares. I just had a word with my broker and he advised me not to buy these shares. He said this is a merali company, there is a possiblity he may sell the land cheaply to himself and start the project himself leaving Sasini shareholders with peanuts. Merali can do anything to make himself "RICH" and leave nothing for the other shareholders.

Merali is placed in all those companies by the elites to rob the shareholders of value! He's been there since the Moi error!
So buyer be warned. Whereas there could be money to be made here, many naive "investors" will be left holding the tail!

Funky-had a similar feeling, you may discover the decision is to create two companies. One that continues with the tea and another to hold the land.

Been trying to figure out why not even civil society or Wangari Maathai has spoken out against this trend of building on Kenya's most arable land.

Btw as @funky & @mainat state, this reminds me of EGADS last year when a real estate rumour sent its price on a sharp parabolic only to leave Wanjikus high and dry that got suckered in by the rally...

@Funky. I concur. Look at Sameer Business Park. It was developed using shareholder's bucks bt somewhere along the line the ownership changed. It's owned 75% by Merali & the rest by shareholders.

not everyone is buying land in kenya in cash. the majority are using land loans from banks worse still everyone is using bank loans to built rental flats whose demand is going down. if you can benefit from the madness in real estate please do early enough.
