High charges loom in planned review of mobile phone tariffs

The story is true enough. Here's the link...

The theory that Safcom wants to increase call rates in order to protect declining profits sounds very plausible to me.

I support the increase and really wish we go back to Ksh 8. Service have really deteriorated since the rates went down, dropped calls, unclear network, congestion etc. Mobile phones are not a reliable means of business anymore.

All tthe telcos will raise their call rates. Safcom must have judged the market to be confident that the competitors don't have a choice. The volatile exchange rate this yr will have a huge increase on the cost of maintenance for those that don't have hedges like KQ. High inflation mostly means less consumer spending. Less revenues for any biz, but they'll have to hike rates to protect the little money they can make.
Airtel will feel the most consumer wrath on hiking rates being the cheerleader for the current price war. Kamikaze biz practices never end nicely. Btw did they launch their 3G in KE like in India?

Seconded; but I prefer 5bob.

There is no point being told that you call will cos 50cts yet you can't complete a conversation.

Perhaps some should come up with a segregated tariff structure where those like myself and GG who prefer quality can pay a premium but get preferential treatment on network allocation and the rest can join the long queue waiting for us to complete our deals... and they can also have their calls dropped when we want to use the network....
