Spending your days in front of the television may contribute to a shortened lifespan, a new study suggests.

Researchers in Australia found that people who averaged six hours a day of TV lived, on average, nearly five years less than people who watched no TV.

For every hour of television watched after age 25, lifespan fell by 22 minutes, according to the research led by Dr. J. Lennert Veerman of the University of Queensland.
Wisdom to detect when share prices hit rock bottom.
When interest on bonds keep going up, you know the bear run is on high street. When interest on bonds start leveling, the bear has met the bull and they have hit rock bottom. When the interest rates on bonds start coming down, the bull has overpowered the bear and you better be riding the bull.

1) This has nothing to do with TV watching. It's all about inactivity! If you are active part of the day and take time out to watch TV, it will definitely not apply to you. If you are inactive - even if you don't watch TV - your natural life will be shorter.

2) This would only apply if you die of natural causes. If you are hit by a China road truck, I'm sure the number of hours you watch TV will not come it play. The question is how many Kenyans die of natural causes??

Finally, who watches TV an average of six hours a day?. Such a person needs help even if he is under no risk of death! Six hours Monday to Sunday? Seriously?

Habari ndiyo hiyo.

C & P from the article

Which means that people who watch a lot of TV tend to lead unhealthy, sedentary lifestyles. It's not the six hours of TV which is killing them, but the likelihood that they are not filling the rest of their waking hours with healthy physical activity. Those who watch huge amounts of TV are also probably more likely to have an unhealthy diet and be overweight.

Have you noticed how many umbrellas are used when it's raining? So umbrella use is associated with wet weather, but common sense tells us umbrellas don't cause rainfall. It's common sense of course but science and statistics can too easily be taken out of context and divorced from reality.

I particularly like the last paragraph.

It's like analyzing the reasoning of MPs and taking their weight before they are elected and again a couple of months/years after they are elected and then concluding that increase in body weight greatly diminishes the reasoning capacity of an individual!!!

There's three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics . . .

I dont think the telly in itself is a monster.

But besides sitting around doing nothing, what effect has taking in scene after scene of violence, sex and such other exciting things have on the mind which is a part of the body?

What I know is, the body has never benefited from watching the typical things on the telly. The 'fashionable' things on the telly will kill you.

They don't only say TV will kill you. They say meat will too. And eggs. And not getting married. And drinking alcohol. And NOTsmile drinking alcohol... The list is endless. Some people take these things literally and get unpleasant results. It's good to put what researchers tell us into perspective as people here have attempted to do. Life is about balance, and in the end, for living - not for avoiding (or inviting) death.

its not watching telly that shortens one's life, its the snacking that goes with it.

As someone said up above, its the lifestyle habits individuals choose that have an impact on their lives
