A group of rowdy patients today pounced on an armed prison's officer at the local hospital. The officer who was guarding a prisoner admitted to the bones ward had been alerted about some patients smoking opium and taking alcohol on the hospital's corridors,by a doctor who was doing the night rounds. The patients used crude weapons and knives to assault the warden as hospital staff watched horrified. The situation was brought under control by other prison wardens who came to the aid of their collegue. The subdued patients claimed immunity from prosecution citing their status as patients. However the hospital's administrators thought otherwise and ordered the offenders to be locked up in the nearest police station. A total of 11 patients were involved in the incident. Most of them had been discharged at earlier dates but were still detained by the hospital authorities pending payment of the bills. The medical staff expressed fears about their safety and vowed to down their tools if the hospital's administration failed to enhance security.
