The Nile treaty, signed by the colonialists in 1929 gives Egypt a lion share of the waters of river nile. signatories to this treaty include Uganda, ethiopia, Kenya and Sudan. Since southern sudan..if created...is not a signatory, will it be afffected by the treaty? Can it consume as much water from the Nile(constructing numerous dams) without Egypt being fussy?

Why is this under sports? Better suited to politics

This treaty is not sustainable mainly because of the major increase in populations and the increasing need for electricity and we know hydro is the most available option. To avert war, Egypt has to find ways of putting up nuclear power plants and start paying a substantial annual fee to these countries for use of this resource. What do you all think?

BBI will solve it

@Marex,
A new treaty on equitable and sustainable use of Nile water was penned down and signed by E&C countries in early/mid may last year.TZ,UG,KE,RW and DRC signed but there has been resistance from Sudan and Egypt>Burundi's stand i am not sure but the two rogue states were give upto June this years to make up their mind.However,this has not stopped countries like TZ from using water from L.Victoria for irrigation.
Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.

Was it a new treaty? I thought it was an intent to force a review of the old treaty. A treaty is not a treaty unless signed by both parties.
