Three (3) guys were really worn out after a long journey, they dint have much money between them and decided to lodge in some cheap motel! The price was Kshs 30 and they each remove kshs 10, pay and go to the reception.Later the receptionist realised there is a promotion and the room is actually kshs 25, she sends the bell boy with 5 bob to take to the 3 guys. The guys are elated they tip the bell boy kshs 2 and they each get kshs 1.

So in essence they each paid kshs 9 and they if they got kshs 1 back, and the bell boy got kshs 2
({9*3}+2=29)What happened to the extra Kshs 1?

Each paid 8.33 for the room and was left with 1.00 change
25 / 3 = 8.33
8.33 + 1 = 9.33
(9.33 x 3) + 2 = 30


When the bellboy brought back 5.00
mistake is to assume they each paid 10 - 1 = 9
instead of considering what was already paid for the room.

Look at it this way. They paid 25 bob to the motel and 2 bob to the bellboy. 25 plus 2 is 27. Therefore each contributed 27/3 equals 9bob. Makes perfect sense as each was retained one bob after the transaction.

25 for the room + (3 * 1 each as discount back) + 2 for the bell boy = 30.
