5 years old for an E-jet is still young! Just some good maintenance and refurbishing
KQ has been sending back the leased ones at only 8 years old. Many other airlines also lease them especially the narrow body for 8 years. The narrow body are used to run many frequencies and accumulate many flight hours within a short period and hence higher fuel and mantainance costs.
Expect an order soon to be announced.
Can't they get the 8-yr olds at very cheap lease/purchase rates to offset the higher fuel usage and maintenance costs?
Delta had bought some old aircraft (can't remember the model) at a very low price which they refurbished. They used the heck out of them. They were cheap so grounding them when biz was slow wasn't a huge drag.
They also cannibalized some for spares to keep the rest running.

"...the airline looks at the entire cost of jet – the purchase price, the maintenance costs, fuel efficiency and other factors – before making decisions. Often, used aircraft make the most economic sense for the airline."
