KNH SUCCESSFUL HISTORIC PENILE RE-IMPLANTATION
Kenyatta National Hospital has achieved a medical science milestone by conducting a successful penile re-implantation the first reconstruction surgery in Kenya and the region.
The procedure known as micro vascular surgery is performed when a patient suffers from a detached body part such as limbs, genitalia or ears, whereby blood vessels are reconnected to restore circulation before the tissue starts to die. This procedure was done by a team of fifteen surgeons specializing in plastic surgery, urology and neurosurgery led by Prof. Stanley Khainga and Dr. Ferdinand Nang’ole .

“The hospital is happy to report that the 16 year old patient whose male organ was severed is recuperating well after a successful re-implantation of the penis. As we are speaking the organ is functioning well, he is able to urinate, erect and engage in sexual gratification.” said Prof.Khainga.

Reiterating KNH’s commitment to provide quality health care, the Ag.CEO, Dr. Thomas Mutie congratulated the team for the medical milestone which is the first not only in Kenya but also the region.

“KNH is at the front line of medical science. We have been able to perform over ten reconstructive surgeries and are on course to do the first liver transplant in the country. We provide specialized care through the best doctors in the country and we recently re-attached a severed arm and the patient is recuperating well.” Said Dr. Mutie.

The lead surgeon, Prof. Khainga, said plans are underway to train more plastic and micro vascular surgeons in conjunction with KNH and to build the capacity of county hospitals across the country. A Korean University is also partnering with UON/KNH plastic surgeons to share experiences on plastic and reconstructive surgery.
