And gossip and opinion is thriving in Africa!! Just open the papers and you'll see it by yourself. Even on front pages, you'll find headline on gossip or opinion instead of important matters A good example is social media and sites like this one of ours. You see how long it takes for juicy topic hitting 1000 posts compared to serious one like this

Ahem. I always feel that our over-fixation with politics at the expense of other activities will be our undoing. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with politics (we all know there is but that's besides the point here), but is it really the only thing? or even the main thing? Take a cursory glance at most of our newspapers in the streets as well as online, quite often the kind of stories they give prominence to are always political. Look at our radio & tv stations, in a 45minute bulletin, they have no qualms allocating a whole 30minutes to pointless politics, often in a way that leaves me asking 'is this all there is in this our land of Kenya?' I still recall the day I read this story online. Though I admired the story of Omari and his dedication, the real tragedy for me was the fact that it had to take a foreigner from halfway across the world to get the story to me, all the time while our own media were literally asleep a mere 1hour away from where it all happened. Is there a worse indictment on their ineptitude and lopsided priorities than this? Life is like playing a violin solo in public and learning the instrument as one goes on.

Compromised standards of recruitment in work places also have a bearing on the quality of service provided so don't expect much. @ kite.We are our own enemies. Just Compare the themes in african and western movies. While Western movies have heros after the act, African movies have sufferers. Western movies end in victory, but ours end in defeat and tears. Our movies will feature disease,or poverty while western movies feature battles.-don't have to be physical. It's as if we thrive in sorrow, darkness, dirt and pain.

Many scout this site to write the next article. Dont be shocked to read a summary of this thread on the local daily's soon. "There are only two emotions in the market, hope & fear. Whenever I come across well travelled and highly educated people in positions of authority behaving talking and reasoning like jungle animals,I lose hope for Africa. We are a strangely unique people who read 'motive' in any attempt to progress. First step is to acknowledge that we are enemies of progress. When the 'white man' came, he found 'us' behaving like 'wild animals' and embarked on the process of civilizing the African. And now, a few years later, it's the African calling himself a savage, and bemoaning his being. It makes me wonder, isn't this the highest form of 'indoctrination', 'Babylon'? For, there's no way a person can speak thus of his self and not be lost. We are doing exactly what the 'white man' wanted us to do. Abandon our identity and embrace the 'enlightenment'. But what will happen when you awaken to the event that the enlightenment ideas have run out breath and are now dead? Where will you run to? Whose idea will you borrow? You Godless race? Idol worshipers. Vampires. What is enlightenment to you? There's only one true enlightenment, being in identity with the most high and unnamable being. To embrace the mind, the body, and the spirit. And be in such unity now, and forever more. I think that is also a foreign idea.My point being that ideas can't be defined as Western,Eastern or African.Africa has to be open to foreign ideas but like @masukuma pointed out, applied to our local conditions. If we've discovered we were doing something(s) in a way that wasn't fulfilling our goals shouldn't we accept it? Is it? What is the 'Ka' in 'Afrika'? I'm not talking about excluding other races, Among the Africans there was communalism, and kinship; what did 'assimilation' do? Families were torn apart, 'native' culture abandoned, and looked at with suspicion. Lol. Can we identify ideas among our tribes that are 'decadent'? Wife inheritance? Imagine the logic behind it. The tribe at its most considerate, neh? But now city life has torn everyone apart, each is on his own. Now we are having the technocity, how will we live in it? Will the 'African' cease to exist? Are we all going to die swimming across the 'oceans'? 'We are', means Identity. Identity, idea. How does one bring the benefits of being and identity to the starving African? Which 'one'? Are you a starving African?

FGM,Witchcraft,Nightrunning,Cannibalism,Mob Jungle justice...
But now city life has torn everyone apart, each is on his own. Now we are having the technocity, how will we live in it? Will the 'African' cease to exist? Are we all going to die swimming across the 'oceans'? 'We are', means Identity. Identity, idea.
The city hasn't torn us apart,we do it ourselves. We cannot afford to think communial because in the city, everything revolves around time and decisions must be arrived at fast and actioned. It's easy to think as 'we' in the village because people embrace the same culture where they are at. It's however impossible to reason like that in a cosmopolitan city. It's every man for himself and what works best for him. People don't hate progress, they just hate adapting new ways of doing things and learning 'how to' in order to make life easier. We would rather stick to the old even if it slows down efficiency /productivity than learn. @ Tycho,What best defines 'African'? cz if it's weird practices, systems and beliefs then they can die very fast as we swim across the 'oceans'. eg saw some people in kisii,2 weeks ago holding on to the belief, that making a girl jump over paraphanelia placed at the door step will protect her from conceiving a child before marriage. And just in case it happens? she gets married off to the oldest bachelor in the village! What would stop such girls from escaping to town to avoid becoming wives of 50/70 yr old bachelors? Another from ate a child in the name of culture. Such beliefs are outdated. It's easy to brush aside some of these traditional practices like 'FGM' and the like. And this is because we already have bias against African mythology and rationality. But, isn't the commercialization of sex a kind of FGM? How different is night running different from 'underground races'? Should all people sleep at night? What if you had the power to tame a hyena? Wouldn't you practice at night? There's so much weird stuff happening now. For example, every year, thousands of youth are killed in the war against crime. Yet this thread has been prompted by the experience of corrupt and unprogressive institutions. It's not about what describes the African best. It's about African essence. The land, the people, the mythology, the philosophy. You were right about time being short in the city. This brings out the city as a program. A program that runs the economic machine of the nation state. The city is a magnetic beast. It's the tax center. You don't want to live in the nethers, one would rather sell his soul in the city.

It's clear to me now. Thanks @masukuma. Blaming it on racial difference is an excuse. The reason why we fail is due to environmental differences: economic and social factors. Obama got it when he said: We need new mindset, new attitude. The whole lot of our country men.I picked up something very impressive: Africans drive through life with brakes on. Waaa, this on blew my head, how true!! Environmental, economic, and social differences, are power relations. And power is about identity. In late eighteenth century, the idea of 'European' superiority came into being. And now when we look at others as superior then we acknowledge inferiority. And the results will always leave us inferior.

How many black characters are on them ? or asian? the black characters end up getting beaten. They also crop up in cartoon featuring jungle.2. Education should enable kids to be enabled to be more creative and thinkers. That way hopefully they will grow without tribal goggles and choose leaders that are not tender-preneurs I wouldn't place so much hope there because like I said, a majority of Tribal African leaders making poor decisions are educated in the best places possible. 3. Read and think and always better yourself True, these people always portray the black as the bad guy. And I always see this in the Hollywood movies, the black guy is always the one being humiliated!!! That's why @kiterunner is asking you, which movies your kid watches. Please be close to your children, and guide them. I pray to God to guide me to guide my children, amen. The tribal leaders are greedy. That's why. So the education didn't change them. And because of their greediness, they joint the eaters! So sad. that is why I am happy having my kid watching "doc macstuffins" We should be able to create our own animations. The few black ones I have watched contain themes revolving around poverty, witchcraft, sicknesses; cholera,malaria,abuse-mashida tu =makes kids develop an inferior attitude towards the society. Raise up confident kids who believe they can be what they desire to be and change the world for better and you will see how they talk. Our 'animations' would need our mythology, our beliefs. How is this possible if we don't understand our heritage? Think of 'Tinga Tinga tales'. Which 'worldview' does it develop? How would an African one look like? 'ION', there are 'rumours' that Aesop's fables are originally from Africa.

The problem is that we have been brainwashed to believe that Africa is a hell hole plagued by all manner of problems and that the rest of the world is a paradise. You just need to read abit of history (and current affairs) to realise that worse conditions have occurred elsewhere. Even in Europe the situation was much worse not so long ago. You can read about feudal europe, the black death, cholera in europe, irish famine, slums in europe, world wars (70m were killed in WW2 just 70yrs ago!), bosnia, Kosovo, syria, beirut, afghanistan, Korea, Niajin massacre carried out by the japanese on the chinese,israel/palestine, india/pakistan, annihilation of the indigenous peoples of the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, latin america etc etc.
