I will never watch another boxing match ever. If you want to see a fight watch UFC and even then it gets tiring really fast. Mayweather is like the Greek team than won Euro 2004.....He plays the rules of the game but nobody will want to remember any of his fights. He is a smart salesman for talking the world into paying him $200m for an entertainment piece of s**t. Unfortunately for him his talk has no cause like Ali's and even for entertainment value he does not come close. I will stick to watching athletics and marathons, there is no hype there, just tough humble people toiling away, I can learn something from that..... Done with rant..

Laughable rant here. FM's record of 48-0 speaks for itself. He has beaten each and every fighter that came his way. If entertainment is valued in $ terms then he is the best at it. Throwing many wild punches in the hope of hitting your oppo is a bar brawl not boxing. Winning within the rules is all that matters and defence is within the rules. Infact 'defend yourself' is a mandatory ref instruction.

I know its difficult for house wives and curious folk tuning into the fight due to the hype to digest the principles but boxing is an art, not a bar brawl.

You are right, ....it looks like the era of thrills in boxing ended with Tyson. And now look at the heavyweight division,..with the Klitschkos boring fans to tears.
The 'market' should correct this. Winning is important but so is delivering a spectacle. I hope fans and TV networks will no longer be willing to pay so much to watch two men play a technical cat and mouse

That is why i did not watch it!!! It is more of wrestling tactics ooh wrestling is better. True Boxing ended with the heavyweights we knew...Tyson Lewis Hollyfield e.t.c. Athletics remains most entertaining i was glued to Bahamas before i slept. The relays sprints gymnastics e.t.c ball games are Worth it.

A boring match is a boring match. It is usually similar criticism when 2 top flight soccer teams, say Real and Barca just pass the ball around and bring forth a draw or a timid 1-0. The boxing world should really care that these people, the housewives and curious folk who tuned in and found the match not worth spit. It is now aficionados playing it up, pulling arrogant airs, pointing out arcane technical aspects and minutiae and completely missing common sense and the big picture. Something is wrong with this. If the regular man tunes in to boxing less and less, the sport will tend more towards the obscure end, like Chess marathons (whose fans rabid fascination with rules, strategy and technical details is unparalleled, but revenues, prize money and wide interest nonexistent).
Perhaps this is what true boxing fans want. A pure experience of nuance and technical details. The casual watcher wants thrills, simplicity, and he feels cheated. The boxing world needs the money this person will pay, otherwise the sport declines. This match squandered a big chance to conscript more fans into boxing

Enough said!!!

Very well put!

The question the purists should ask themselves is, were there to be a rematch, would it attract as much buzz as today's bout? Would it generate as much revenue as today's bout?

The answers are NO and NO!!! I doubt any of them would even get to 50%. And this is exactly what should worry the stakeholders!

If the fans (housewives or otherwise) were left demanding for a rematch then that would have been a good encounter and extremely good news to stakeholders. As it is now, it will be a nightmare to market Mayweather's September fight. And he is currently the easiest boxer to market!
Never count on making a good sale. Have the purchase price be so attractive that even a mediocre sale gives good returns.

I have learnt the following over my short life - the good guy does not always win! I wish the good guy would win but... that ain't the case! it's dark and it's cynical but being good is not a factor of winning! being prepared, putting in the work and being tactical creates wins not being good!

Mayweather like Suarez is a terrible human being but.... he is a sports man that wins for his team.

Mayweather will still be very marketable but only because of a flaw in human psychology which the organizers know very well and will exploit to the fullest. The human capacity for envy and hatred is greater than that for admiration and love.

More people (I included) tuned in hoping to see Mayweather being beaten because he is selfish and arrogant. All Mayweather needs to do to ensure we all pay to watch him fight is piss us more by talking trash, instagram pictures with bundles of money on his bed and buy even more expensive cars and jets.

Once he gets us all hating and full of envious bile he will pick a fight with another nice guy that we will all be cheering on to whip his a**...... and like he says we will all pay and he will collect. Meanwhile he will train like hell to make sure he wins again and we will all hate him more and increase the price we are willing to pay to see him lose.... and again he will collect.... I hate this guy....... he has this all figured out.

By the way - for those who missed the match... it's being rerun on Cartoon Network and Boomerang in place of Tom and Jerry... DSTV reckon that the match is just the right kind of stuff you need to show kids - in addition to all the never ending chasing that happens in both shows - the hugging your opponent thing adds what will be a positive influence to kids!
By the way na kama hauna DSTV... you can get a copy from river road saa hii

To the curious onlookers and housewives. This was not just another match, it was billed as 'the match of the century' for a reason. It pitted 2 of the best ever pound for pound fighters of their generation, to get here, FM and MP had to fight for accumulated 40 years against some extremely gifted oppos. During this fights we purists watched without the help of the curious public and housewives. Some of those bouts had mismatches that resulted in spectacular knockouts and entertainment that some here expected. We purists enjoyed it all but also prepared us for this fight. Knowing very well that this fight would be about legacy and nothing else.

FM was fighting MP both expert pugilists and expecting the fight to be loose and entertaining is naive. Boxing has never been a mainstream sport and that will never change. Occasionally there will be fighters like Ali, Tyson and FM who bring the game to centre stage but thats an anomaly.

Right in all counts... The rest of us were scammed into thinking we had a Mike Tyson type fight on our hands.. It was on everyone's face for so long until our grandmothers knew about it. It had to be great.... Everyone talked about it and people picked sides... How could this not be a good fight? Only to be treated to a marathon with jabs in between.

I will speak as one of the curious onlookers who was conned into missing precious sleep to watch this joke of a fight. Fight of the Century is what it was billed to be but now that it is done I doubt that even the purists that you speak for will agree that it deserves that, it never came close. It was a great marketing ploy with a buildup and pay purse that broke all records but to attribute that to the greatness of the fighters especially the winner Floyd Mayweather is to still cling to the truth of the salespitch after we have all bought and be thoroughly disappointed.

Floyd Mayweather may be the best of his generation but that is because this generation does not have fighters. He has a 48-0 record over a period of 19 years which is great for him to avoid injury and make a lot of money so he is a a great businessman and a a smart fighter but a great fighter is a title he will have a hard time earning.

His winning record is good but it pales to that of Sugar Ray Robinson who once went on a 91 match winning spree with 69 knockouts. He is a talker and even thinks himself greater than Ali but Ali would tell him he is not as pretty nor is he as smart but aside from that Ali represented a cause greater than himself for which he will be remembered long after he is dead.

Mayweather is a winner and nobody will ever take that from him but let him not bother us again with another hyped contest ever again and his small boy ego that makes us want to see him beaten...... well now that I have said it that is the one quality for which he exceeds all past champions..... he has created a great desire for people to want to see him beaten and for that the world will make him the richest boxer ever.
