You’ve gagged us, journalists tell Uhuru

Quote:
The amendments also retain the fines of Sh20 million against media houses earlier proposed by MPs and expands the offences for which media houses can be punished by a government-controlled tribunal.

Quote:
Critics point out that while President Kenyatta accepts that sections of the Bill are unconstitutional, he does not recommend their deletion, but instead goes ahead to modify the related penalties or to strengthen them. For example, his memorandum says penal sanctions for breaches of the journalist’s code of ethics may be improper, but then goes ahead to restore the Sh20 million fine against media houses and reduce the fine against individual journalists from one million shillings to Sh500,000.

Two paragraphs in one article condemning the monetary punishment?

It takes two seconds to tell the truth and it costs nothing. A lie takes time and it costs everything.

Sasa hii mambo ya mswada imezidi

I think the papers should carry one day with issues relating to the law that are unconstitutional - nothing else - not only as a form of protest but also to educate the masses on what the real issues are.

The truth is that a good number of citizens think some regulation is necessary if only to bring integrity back but not necessarily to see the media muzzled.

Amid all the din about being muzzled, the real issues are not being heard

I happened to listen briefly to One Fm today and "journalist" or is it "media personality" DNG was promoting unsafe sex (not using condoms) because according to him "stuff happens in the heat of the moment". Sasa hii ni ushenzi gani and people get surprised that there is moral decay! So long as the media is careless on what they report, opine or expose the society into, according to me let them be prepared to face the consequences.
And when did opinion become "news" fact?

Self-preservation

"Secrets and lies… Everyone in the world deals with these every day of their lives. To protect themselves. To protect someone else. It is all in the way that you look at the
situation.”
― Lacey Thorn

"Every man's his own friend, my dear," replied Fagin, with his most insinuating grin. "He hasn't as good a one as himself anywhere."
Except sometimes," replied Morris Bolter, assuming the air of a man of the world. "Some people are nobody's enemies but their own, yer know."

Don't believe that!" said the Jew. "When a man's his own enemy, it's only because he's too much his own friend; not because he's careful for everybody but himself. Pooh! Pooh! There ain't such a thing in nature.”
― Charles Dickens, Oliver Twist

CORD wanajua kucheza siasa. So if they didnt want the bill to pass, why werent all their MPs present? Handful of MPs walked out of bunge and then two voices were on the opposing side when the vote was taken. Then i saw larry getting cosy with Midiwo last night, not asking him the right questions such as the one I just asked :)
And all the noise about hefty fines, someone tell the media to report what they have bothered to countercheck, then no one will fine them.
I am happy

This media guys stink.........they have become experts in messing peoples names and character without a care about that person and his family.

I once read this heading in a gutter press ;-NGILU TO DIVORCE HUSBAND AND MARRY NYACHAE.

Ok it was a gutter press.....but imagine what went through the individuals mentioned, the spouses, the children...close family and friends...

Wafinywe kabisa.Let us promote respondible journalism. And their biggest beef is the fines........very telling.
Love is beautiful and so are those who share it.With Love, Marriage is an amazing event in ones life time, the foundation of joy, happiness and success.
