When the astronauts took this picture, they were sitting up-side-down. Have you ever noticed how the space rockets turn up-side-down as soon as they clear the clouds?

I am impressed by the depth and breadth of this discussion. The contrasts drawn between Africa and the rest of the world have got me interested in history in a way that I haven't been before. It seems to me that history has such enormous influence on the present and the future. And that if a people should change the current course of their society, they must first comprehend their history in very critical terms.

What T*&%$#*! Aha moment! Japan that size produces all these cars, electronics on the African roads/houses and the scrap metal everywhere in a Africa to boot?

Japan is 2/3 size of kenya with more than three times Kenya's population .70% mountainous and only around 20% habitable in a hostile corner of the globe

Now that one thinks about it, Necessity is the mother of invention. I asked about England.. how a tiny country can cause so much suffering, how they remain financial giants. Japan is clearly illuminated in the comment above. England must have realized the disadvantaged position they were in and opted to exploit the world. Japan opted to be innovative. While we in Africa in our abundance took a chill pill and opted to let others do the thinking for us!

Change starts from within. This is my declaration 'I will produce that which I consume. I will make money from selling its excess. I will not direct my efforts to bettering a parasite/user to my detriment'

Thank you @Magigi for 'Man's search for meaning' by Viktor Frankl. He who wrote 'Don't aim at success. The more you aim at it and make it a target, the more you are going to miss it. For success, like happiness, cannot be pursued; it must ensue, and it only does so as the unintended side-effect of one's dedication to a cause greater than oneself or as the by-product of one's surrender to God'

We have had a superpower at any one time in human history. Spain, Portugal, Rome, Britain, Greece, USA etc have had their turn. It so happened that Britain’s opportunity to be superpower was, maybe accidentally, preceded by industrial revolution which opened new opportunities in international commerce. There were also major breakthroughs in science, making it easier to travel long distances across oceans more safely and in much lesser time. For these and other reasons Britain was able to create a larger empire than any of the preceding superpowers. With advent of globalisation and civilisation, the duty of superpower is limited to creating deterrence and maintaining global peace and security, something the US of A is not doing well. Who will be the next superpower after USA?

They also cracked the LONGITUDE PROBLEM.

it depends on where they were! if you launch from the equator as the rocket dips south wards - the earth behind you will be as seen.

secondly, its not that the west deliberately drew the maps to mess up our minds but rather - what the effect of drawing the map with North on the top has.

Egocentricity is having a view or perspective that revolves around you or your situation at the center. Thus, in cartography and geography, an egocentric society is one that places itself in either the center of a depiction of the world, or at the top. Information at the top of a map is commonly viewed as being both more visible and more significant.
Since Europe was a powerhouse in the world, producing both heavy exploration and the printing press – it was instinctual for European mapmakers to put Europe (and the Northern Hemisphere) as the focus at the top of maps. Today Europe and North America remain dominant cultural and economic forces, producing and influencing many maps – showing the Northern Hemisphere at the top of the map.

It is human nature, many nations or peoples are envious of any country that is superpower. That is why there is struggle for economic and military dominance everywhere as a means to superpower status. This economic and military competition is the reason why the superpower trophy has changed hands several times throughout human history.
By the end of the 19th century Germany and the United States had eroded Britain's economic lead. Subsequent military and economic tensions between Britain and Germany were major causes of the First World War. The First World War can therefore be seen as a transition from Britain as superpower to either Germany or US. Of course Germany lost the battle. After Second World War, the USSR came calling for the trophy hence the onset of transition period marked by the cold war. USSR lost the battle. As we speak, China is aiming for the trophy.
As you can see, transition period from one superpower to another is very unsettling and is one factor that can lead to Third World War.
But come to think of it, where would we be without this kind of competition throughout human history? Not very far from Dark Ages in my view.

That upside down blue marble shows West Africa in the east and East Africa in the west, clearly not correct even from our understanding of ‘sunrise’ and ‘sunset’.

This guys also say Australia is down-under. Now we know UK is the one which is down under.

Who decided which side is up and which is down. I believe the tropics should have been taken as the vertical plane for positioning the globe.

My point exactly! Dark ages is good.. Me, my goats, my crops and bare chested beauties running around. Isn't that the life?

Now I'm stuck with this modern times.. STDs, cancer, stress and unnecessary thinking! Think about it, the more we think we are going forward, the more we go back!
