A lower house - the
National Assembly
Each constituency (290 the
number gazetted by
Independent Electoral and
Boundaries Commission in
October 2012).
Majority of the Members
of National Assembly will
be directly elected by
voters
Each county assembly will
elect a woman MP -
therefore guaranteeing a
minimum of 47 women
MPs in the National
Assembly.

I wonder what she'll be earning as a women's rep. Probably far less than what she's getting now as an asst minister and mp.

By the way why not go for the MP?

Wacheni usingizi. A Woman Rep is basically an MP.

Ditto. Women rep joins the lower house but elected across the county

Again I think its more easier to win as MP than county Women Rep

The stature and influence of the lower house will be greatly watered down.....
also, I suspect the S&R commish is going to serve up a very cold surprise in the name of vastly reduced pay for MPs post April 2013, with KRA stomping in with all four of its elephantiasis feet. Tough times ahead

Actually, the lower and upper house terminologies for the houses of parliament is misleading. The National Assembly will have more functions and powers than the Senate.

Yes, the National Assembly will have the potential to be more powerful than the Senate as a collective body due to the more powers espoused in the constitution. The Kenyan senate is not like the US, its role is pretty much limited to county matters. However, because of the huge numbers of MPs (ratio about 4.5 to 1 senator) and the fact that parliamentary discipline of non-issue oriented MPs is low, I foresee individual senators having an outsize influence early on and then maybe people like the majority leader and chairmen of assembly committees will assert their authority later on if they are organized.
