What the dictators did in their "backward" countries is really not different than what is done in "developed, civilized" countries. The difference is the weapon used. The dictators directly attacked dissidents, and many times tortured and/or killed them outright. whereas....
"Developed" nations use a rigged judicial system and "rule-of-law" to bring a myriad of "conspiracy" and other charges against dissidents, which leads to a conviction in which all assets are frozen, family members- wives, children, siblings are shamed or even also charged as co-conspirators, and then all are sentenced to multi-decade prison sentences where they are summarily tortured by living conditions, sleep deprivation, poisoned food, harassment, lack of light and outside time, lack of learning materials and communication, and brutal homosexual activity in a prison complex or a state home for children. And then they get depressed and kill themselves, or die from diseases brought on by poor food and aggressive medicines.
So the dictators basically don't do their proper paperwork. Either that or it's all just semantics.
And then there's drones, which can be a blanket-applied license to kill terrorists, terrorists being a term that can be blanket applied to, ahem, dissidents.
So yeah, it's all just branding. He with the bigger fan base and better media presence wins. It's all a reality TV show, but the blood is real.
You will never see a Western leader chided for the conditions suffered by people in thousands of prisons- torture such as Guantanamo or any Western prison for that matter, or war crimes, or police daily brutality- killings, maimings. They are all just "isolated incidents". But for the "dictator", if someone sneezes, he must have been withholding tissues. Especially if he doesn't speak "Hollywood English" and doesn't wear a three piece suit.
Not saying that dictators are justified, but that they are no different than any other "leader".
Best,
Hill

Right. It certainly helps to have the most widespread news media at hand to relay the news. A pacifier for the masses back at home so that they dont ask the hard questions while for the rest of the others to be awed.

George W. Bush on dictatorship:
"You don't get everything you want. A dictatorship would be a lot easier..." Describing what it's like to be governor of Texas. (Governing Magazine 7/98)
"If this were a dictatorship, it would be a heck of a lot easier, just so long as I'm the dictator..." CNN.com, December 18, 2000)
"A dictatorship would be a heck of a lot easier, there's no question about it..." (Business Week, July 30, 2001)

So what conspiracy theorists were saying about Gaddafi was true! Quote:The email identifies French President Nicholas Sarkozy as leading the attack on Libya with five specific purposes in mind: to obtain Libyan oil, ensure French influence in the region, increase Sarkozy’s reputation domestically, assert French military power, and to prevent Gaddafi’s influence in what is considered “Francophone Africa.”
Most astounding is the lengthy section delineating the huge threat that Gaddafi’s gold and silver reserves, estimated at “143 tons of gold, and a similar amount in silver,” posed to the French franc (CFA) circulating as a prime African currency. In place of the noble sounding “Responsibility to Protect” (R2P) doctrine fed to the public, there is this “confidential” explanation of what was really driving the war [emphasis mine]:
This gold was accumulated prior to the current rebellion and was intended to be used to establish a pan-African currency based on the Libyan golden Dinar. This plan was designed to provide the Francophone African Countries with an alternative to the French franc (CFA).
(Source Comment: According to knowledgeable individuals this quantity of gold and silver is valued at more than $7 billion. French intelligence officers discovered this plan shortly after the current rebellion began, and this was one of the factors that influenced President Nicolas Sarkozy’s decision to commit France to the attack on Libya.)
Though this internal email aims to summarize the motivating factors driving France’s (and by implication NATO’s) intervention in Libya, it is interesting to note that saving civilian lives is conspicuously absent from the briefing.
Instead, the great fear reported is that Libya might lead North Africa into a high degree of economic independence with a new pan-African currency.
French intelligence “discovered” a Libyan initiative to freely compete with European currency through a local alternative, and this had to be subverted through military aggression. http://www.foreignpolicy...-for-libya-intervention/
