Eddy wrote:All this solutions sound very simple and easy to implement....... airline business is pretty complicated...Unions are very powerful and those suggesting contracts should realise this has to be negotiated with the union and by the way this was done away with 2 years ago when KQ realised it was counter productive - than is when the gulf airlines were recruiting kq staff like nobodys business. Goodwill is absolutely necessary not only for external but also internal customers. Crew have to be licensed by some parastatal under government you do not just wake up one morning and employ people and expect them to perform on a 777 when they are used to an ATR. I also think it is bad practise to poach staff from other organisations and in an arrogant the way it is being done and especially when this is not informed by goodwill but desperation. Negotiation still remains the way forward..... remember COTU has asked to intervene as it has been in the picture throughout but have we heard anything from Atwoli, there is more than meets the eye here. With all due respect, In Flight Attendants are basically glorified waiters/waitresses in the air, (with just a dash of sophistication). They should not expect to be treated like Engineers, Pilots etc. And if they can find some place where they are treated that way, the door is open. Point taken on satisfying internal as well as external customers. A lot of external customers are damn unhappy. These include travellers and definitely shareholders. Staff should not expect to "eat" all the profits, in the name of negotiation. Atwoli would not want to lose his constituency, so do not expect him to back KQ Mgt in Public. There's no profit in it for him.

Interestingly, I have just watched a TV clip with Atwoli actually asking KQ staff to reconsider their strike. He says that since Mgt are willing to negotiate they should give this a chance.

Even the querulous Atwoli knows when workers might get their a***s kicked. KQ workers had better be very afraid if they choose to go down that path...

Like I said before, the union bosses have been pushing the staff to make these demands. And even though it is the flight attendants and ground staff who have been talking about the strike, the pilots would also most likely join in.
What worries me about this is that Naikuni is usually very dismissive of the union. He has no time for them (and he's right in this instance) when they make non-negotiable demands. Atwoli put it very aptly when he said that a strike should be the last course where the management does not want to negotiate!
I wonder whether it would be better for KQ to outsource the in-flight services! Let the attendants be hired, trained and paid by someone else, and KQ to vet, manage and review their performance! Just a thought!

I just flew back from Europe, and the difference between the miserable unhappy uncooperative KQ staff and those smiling friendly helpful ones on KLM is glaring! Imagine an airline where staff wear badges written "we smile". Pathetic!!! Business opportunities are like buses, there's always another one coming

Imagine an airline where staff wear badges written "we smile". Pathetic!!! KLM is awesome! The staff [the gals are very pretty... yes, I like the tall blonds] is generally helpful. The food is good with more choices than KQ. As an airline KQ needs to do much better! I think KQ needs a dose of KLM staffing! Or go the Emirates way with a diverse staff. And yes, I have a weakness for the ladies! Apparently, the 'unwritten' rule is only the attractive ones are hired by Emirates! I have never seen an ugly Emirates stewardess...
